#9 Rock Valley takes two from WolfPack

Madison College opens six-game homestand to close regular season on Wednesday

ROCKFORD, ILL. - Defending Region 4 champion and #9-ranked Rock Valley College flexed some muscle Tuesday in sweeping Madison College in a Region 4 doubleheader. The Golden Eagles, who are undefeated against region competition, won both games via run-rule by scores of 9-1 in six innings and 16-0 in five innings. The decisions widen the gap in the all-time series to 52-19 in favor of RVC, winners of 14 straight head-to-head meetings.

Game #1: #9 Rock Valley College 9, Madison College 1 (6 innings)

Rock Valley College took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, using two singles and a steal. It remained a one-run differential until the third, when RVC took advantage of a leadoff walk, a steal, and a single up the middle for a 2-0 advantage.

The WolfPack nearly plated a run in the fourth; however, a fielder's choice grounder by Kendall Weik with two runners on ended the threat.

A pair of Madison College errors with two outs in the bottom of the fourth added up to another Golden Eagles run. The home team then doubled their run total in the fifth with three runs on three extra base hits and an error to push the differential to 6-0.

Madison College got on the scoreboard in the sixth. Ava Stahl reached first on an error by the second baseman to open the inning, and back-to-back singles by Rylee Rogers and Raegen Schwarz loaded the bases with nobody out. After a pop out in foul territory, sophomore Brooke Anderson came through with a fielder's choice ground ball that plated Stahl. With runners at the corners, Weik send a fly ball to left that was unable to find a place to land as she flew out to again leave runners on.

The game ended in the next half inning as the Golden Eagles registerd a run-scoring single and a run-ruled, walk-off home run.

Righthander Brooke Steinhorst (9-6) was tagged for seven earned runs on 13 hits and a walk over her 5.1 innings of work.

Rogers, Schwarz, Steinhorst, and Jeneya Marquez Perez each registered a hit, while Stahl scored the lone run and Anderson picked up the only RBI.

Game #2: #9 Rock Valley College 16, Madison College 0 (5 innings)

The day's second game belonged completely to Rock Valley College (36-7), throwing a one-hitter and racking up the most runs and hits against the WolfPack by any team this season. After plating one run in the first inning against starter Kendall Weik, the sophomore was replaced after three batters and one run in the second inning. New pitcher freshman Jeneya Marquez Perez allowed five more runs to score in the second, four in the third, and five in the fourth.

The lone WolfPack hit came in the top of the fourth when a line drive single by first year Cora Nelson followed back-to-back walks to load the bases with two outs. With an opportunity to chip into the 11-run deficit, freshman Hayden Schabel ripped a hard line drive that was caught by the first baseman to end the inning.

Weik (8-7) took the loss after giving up four runs, three of which were earned, on two hits and three walks. She was credited with two strikeouts in her one inning of work. Marquez Perez, a former Monona Grove HS athlete, worked the final three innings and surrendered 12 runs on 14 hits and three walks, while also striking out one batter.
