MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College softball team has quickly developed a very distinct pattern in their first week of Region 4 competition, which resulted in three consecutive doubleheader sweeps with the day's first win coming in run-ruled fashion. That pattern held up Friday as the WolfPack took two games from South Suburban College in the 2025 home opener at
Robert D. Goodman Softball Field by scores of 8-0 in six innings, highlighted by a
Brooke Steinhorst two-hitter, and 8-4 in the finale. The two victories give the Pack a 13-7 edge in the all-time series with the Bulldogs, as well as bring head coach
Leo Kalinowski to 399 career softball coaching victories at Madison College.
Game #1: Madison College 8, South Suburban College 0 (6 innings)
Sophomore pitcher
Brooke Steinhorst (5-2) recorded her third consecutive win as she limited the South Suburban College offense to just two hits and issued four walks over six scoreless innings. The righthander from Poynette, Wisconsin, set a season-high with eight strikeouts, which matches a career-best effort from her first two starts as a freshman in 2024.
Steinhorst also did her part at the plate, as she delivered the first run of the game. Up with one on and two outs, she doubled on a fly ball to center to drive in
Rylee Rogers. A double in the next at bat by
Kendall Weik allowed Steinhorst to touch home, and then a third straight clutch hit from
Brooke Anderson made it 3-0 with Weik scoring.
The lead increased to 5-0 in the third.
Raegen Schwarz led off with a single and Steinhorst reached on an error. After both moved into scoring position on a sacrifice by Weik, Anderson came through with a line drive to center to score both runners. A sacrifice fly by Schwarz in the fourth was deep enough for
Amie Richmond to tag up and score from third for a 6-0 advantage.
The WolfPack earned the run-rule walk-off in the sixth when Rogers lined a single to left with
Ava Stahl on base. The ball was misplayed by the left fielder, allowing not only Stahl to score, but Rogers to race all the way around for the eight-run win.
Rogers, a Belmont, Wisconsin, native, was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and one batted in. Anderson came through with two hits and three runs batted in. Weik was the third batter with two base hits, which led to a run scored and one driven in.Â
Steinhorst matched Rogers with two runs scored, while also driving in another as part of her 1 for 2 day. And Schwarz finished with a hit, a RBI, and a run.
Game #2: Madison College 8, South Suburban College 4
Madison College jumped out to a three-run lead in the nightcap, as
Brooke Anderson and
Kendall Weik delivered clutch two-out hits to score three runs. Anderson's line drive back through the middle scored
Rylee Rogers, and Weik drove a double to left to bring in
Raegen Schwarz and Anderson.Â
The lead held through two innings until South Suburban College (6-10) pulled even at 3-3 in the third. The runs came as Weik loaded the bases on two hit batters and a walk, and then saw them come in on a fielder's choice, an error, and single.Â
The WolfPack immediately regained the lead in the home half thanks to a
Tailer Bartelt sacrifice fly that plated
Brooke Steinhorst. The lead grew to 6-3 in the fourth as
Ava Stahl line a run-scoring triple to right, and then scored on an error by the Bulldogs catcher during a double steal. Stahl drove in another run in the fifth with a two-out single to bring in Anderson from third.
After SSC tallied their final run to close the gap to 7-4, the Pack regained a four-run advantage. Schwarz opened with a double and then crossed home on an Anderson opposite field single.
Stahl recorded her second three-hit game in the past three outings and has hit safely in six consecutive contests. The native of Wautoma, Wisconsin, finished 3 for 4 with two runs batted in and a run scored.
Anderson went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBI, giving the former River Valley HS athlete her own six-game hitting streak that includes going 9 for 14 over the last four.Â
Schwarz and Bartelt each had two hits, as well, with the former scoring two times and the latter driving in a run.Â
Weik (6-1) also earned her third straight victory and struck out a season-high 13 batters, marking her third game this season with ten or more K's. She allowed four runs, three of which were earned, on three hits and five free passes.
