SUGAR GROVE, ILL. - For the second time this week, the Madison College softball team went on the road a swept a Region 4 doubleheader as they swept Thursday's twin bill at Waubonsee Community College by scores of 15-1 and 11-5. Sophomores
Brooke Anderson and
Tailer Bartelt each homered, with Anderson's coming in the form of a grand slam and Bartelt finishing a double away from the cycle. The all-time series with the Chiefs stands at 20-14 in favor of the WolfPack. In the four games this week, the WolfPack has amassed 63 hits and 49 runs, while holding the opposition to ten runs.
Game #1: Madison College 15, Waubonsee Community College 1 (5 innings)
Waubonsee Community College tallied the game's first run in the bottom of the first with a bases loaded hit by pitch from starting pitcher
Kendall Weik to force in a run. It was her second hit batter and third free pass of the inning. Luckily for Weik, her teammates had her back with a three-run top of the second. Three straight singles saw Anderson drive in Weik to tie the game at 1-1. An error allowed
Tristen Young to touch home three batters later, and a bases loaded walk of
Rylee Rogers made it a two-run lead for the visitors.
In the third,
Brooke Steinhorst led off with a single, and advanced to third on a double by Weik to right. Young, a freshman Wausau, Wisconsin, then roped another two-bagger to center to make it 5-1 with Steinhorst and Weik scoring.
A five-run fourth frame put the game out of reach. After Rogers opened with a double to left, she scored on an error for a 6-1 advantage. Steinhorst drove in a run with a single to right, and Anderson did the same grounding a ball through the left side.
Hayden Schabel's sacrifice fly to right plated Young, and
Tailer Bartelt drove a double to centerfield wall to score Anderson, giving the Pack a 10-1 edge.
The finishing touches came in the fifth when the WolfPack loaded the bases with two single and a walk, and Anderson hammered a two-out grand slam to left field for her second career home run. Back-to-back doubles from Schabel and Bartelt capped the scoring at 15-1.
Anderson, a native of Plain, Wisconsin was 3 for 4 with six runs batted in and three runs scored. She becomes the ninth player in team history with six or more RBI in a single game, while also setting season-highs in all three categories.
Young was right ahead of Anderson in the order and also finished a career-best 3 for 4. She scored twice and drove in another two runs. Weik posted two hits and a walk, which all led to three runs scored. Rogers and Steinhorst each had two hits, two runs, and a RBI. And Bartelt batted in a pair of runs with her two hits.
In the circle, Weik (5-1) surrendered the lone run on five hits, one walk, and two hit batters. She finished with four strikeouts.
Game #2: Madison College 11, Waubonsee Community College 5
Madison College again had to play from behind to start the second game as Waubonsee Community College (11-8) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. A lead off home run against starter
Brooke Steinhorst, followed by a single, a steal, a passed ball, and a sacrifice fly.
The WolfPack pulled even in the top of the third.
Tailer Bartelt smashed her first career home run with a solo shot to lead off the frame.
Rylee Rogers tripled two batters later, and then scored when she slid into home ahead of the tag on a fielder's choice by
Raegen Schwarz.
The lead grew to 5-2 in the fourth with a two-out rally.
Cora Nelson single through the right side and eventually scored on a Bartelt single to right, Following a third base hit from
Ava Stahl, freshman
Hayden Schabel delivered a two-run double to left.
Some more clutch hitting with two outs in the sixth pushed the differential to 8-3. With two runners on, Schwarz ripped a two-bagger to left to score pinch runner
Kaley Koltz, and then two more runs came in when Steinhorst hit a single up the middle.
The Chiefs put another run on the scoreboard in the sixth to close to within four; however, Madison College answered back with three runs in the seventh. Bartelt's monster day continued with a two-run triple to right field, and then she scored on a run-producing ground out by Schabel.
Bartelt nearly hit for the cycle, finishing 3 for 4 with a single, a triple, and a homer. The Evansville, Wisconsin, native, drove in four runs and scored three to set career-highs in all three categories. For the day she was 5 for 8 with four extra base hits, six RBI, and three runs scored.
Two other sophomores came through with three-hit performances as Stahl went 3 for 5 in the leadoff spot and Steinhorst was 3 for 4 batting cleanup. Stahl scored one run and Steinhorst had two runs driven in. Schabel, a catcher from Iron Ridge, Wisconsin, replaced Rogers in the lineup and had two hits, three RBI, and a turn scored.
Anderson added two hits and a run to complete her day with five hits, six RBI, and four runs.
Steinhorst (4-2) also earned the win as the Poynette, Wisconsin, native, worked seven innings and struck out four batters. She allowed three earned runs on ten hits and two walks.

Robert D. Goodman Softball Field for the first time in 2025 on Friday, March 28, with their home opener against South Suburban College (6-8). The WolfPack is 11-7 all-time against the Bulldogs.
