MILWAUKEE, WISC. - Thursday's road game at Bryant & Stratton College was an opportunity for the Madison College women's basketball team to avenge an eight-point loss from last month. Trailing by 20 late in the third quarter, the WolfPack rallied to within five; however, they were unable to complete the comeback and took a 63-56 loss in Region 4 competition. Four players scored in double figures for the Pack, who trail the all-time series by a 6-2 margin after the Bobcats swept the regular season series.
Madison College trailed by seven at halftime, and managed to cut the differential down to 33-30 after
Jaida Gaskins hit a jumper just over three minutes into the half. Bryant & Stratton College (12-11) answered with a 17-0 run that saw the WolfPack go without a field goal more than five minutes. With the deficit now at it's largest of 20 at 50-30, Madison College had plenty of work to go and started with a
Dani Latz bucket to end the drought. In the fourth quarter, the Pack nearly matched the earlier Bobcats run as they scored a dozen straight points thanks to a pair of jumpers from Latz and consecutive three-pointers by Gaskins and
Hannah Solie. The surge also saw the home team held without a basket for seven minutes. Latz scored again on a fast break to make it 58-53 with 1:24 to play, and after three BSC free throws, Solie sank another three for a 61-56 differential with 18 seconds left. Two more successful free throws by the Bobcats and a missed three by Gaskins ended the game.
The WolfPack held the lead for most of the first quarter after scoring the game's opening four points. The score was dead even at 9-9 going into the second quarter, where BSC secured its first lead of the night. The Bobcats closed the first half with a 10-4 stretch that produced a 29-22 score at halftime.
Latz, a 5'10" forward, racked up 16 points, seven rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block. She shot 8 for 16 from the floor.
Gaskins made one of her six buckets from beyond the arc en route to 13 points on 6 of 16 shooting. The guard from Coon Rapids, Minnesota, added three boards, three assists, and three steals.
Verona, Wisconsin, native,
Maia Ellis recorded her second double-digit scoring effort in the last four games with 11 points, while also pulling in a team-best eight rebounds. During the four-game stretch, the 5'10" guard is averaging 9.2 points and 9.2 rebounds. Ellis, who made 5 of 7 shot attempts and one free throw, also led Madison College with four assists.
Solie was tops with two 3-pointers as part of a 3 for 12 night, while also sinking both of her free throws. The former Chetek-Weyerhaeuser HS athlete also contributed three assists and three steals.
Overall, the WolfPack finished 24 of 66 (36%) from the field, 3 for 21 (14%) from beyond the arc, and 5 for 12 (41%) at the line. The Bobcats, meanwhile, sank six 3-pointers and were 23 for 30 at the free throw line. Madison College finished with a 32-18 lead in points in the paint, while BSC was plus-nine in fast break points, plus-four in second chance points, and plus-eight on the glass. The Pack did commit five fewer turnovers.
