NIACC pulls away in second half, WolfPack drop second straight

Trio scores in double figures in non-region setback

MADISON, WISC. - North Iowa Area Community College possessed plenty of offensive firepower on Saturday, and used it to pull away from the Madison College women's basketball team during the second half of a non-region game inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. Keelyn Zwirschitz led three WolfPack players in double figures, including another double-double for Dani Latz; however, the Trojans had five players score ten or more points as they put up the highest point total against Madison College in a game this season. The decision gives NIACC a 3-0 edge in the all-time series.

Madison College held a narrow lead for the game's first three-plus minutes after Latz scored the first two baskets of the afternoon. North Iowa Area Community College (18-6) engineered a 15-3 run that gave the visitors a 20-11 advantage in the first quarter. The WolfPack answered right back, using a Zwirschitz three-pointer to start a 14-2 surge for a 25-22 lead after Zwirschitz beat the buzzer to end the quarter.

The run continued into the second quarter with five straight points for the Pack to reach their largest lead of the game at 30-22. North Iowa chipped away at the differential, and after the two teams traded baskets and leads for a couple minutes, NIACC began a barrage of four consecutive three-pointers to eventually go up 51-41 with 1:42 remaining. In the final minute, the home team fought back with six unanswered points to trail 51-47 after a high-scoring first half.

The scoring slowed in the second half, especially for Madison College, which fell behind 68-49 after the Trojans started the second half with a 17-2 burst. The largest differential of the game was cut down to 14 when Hannah Solie sank a three-pointer late in the quarter. Five straight points to open the fourth quarter made it a 73-64 game with just over eight minutes to go; however, the WolfPack would not score again for another four-and-a-half minutes as NIACC slowly put the game away.

Zwirschitz, a guard from Antigo, Wisconsin, notched her 11th double-digit scoring game of the season with a team-best 17 points on 6 of 14 shooting that included makes on both of her three-point attempts. She was also a perfect 3 for 3 at the free throw line, and finished with four rebounds, two blocks, an assist, and one steal.

Maia Ellis tallied a career-high 14 points, to go along with seven rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block. The native of Verona, Wisconsin, has scored ten or more points in three of the last five outings.

Latz registered her 17th double-double this season thanks to 13 points and a dozen rebounds, while also dishing out three assists. She shot 6 of 17 overall and 1 for 2 at the line. Jaida Gaskins led the team with a career-high-tying five assists.

For the game, Madison College shot 39% (28-71) from the floor, 43% (7-16) from beyond the arc, and 83% (5-6) at the charity stripe. The seven 3-pointers marks the seventh game this season with at least that many; however, the Trojans sank a dozen, while also holding scoring advantages for points off turnovers (28-13) and points in the paint (46-38).
