WolfPack survives tough test from Joliet

Madison College finishes five-game homestand with three wins

MADISON, WISC. - Tuesday night's 60-52 win over Region 4 foe Joliet Junior College gives the Madison College women's basketball team their most wins in a season since the 2019-20 campaign, and has coach Angel Whetstone and company one win away from her first career double-digit win season. The WolfPack went 3-2 as they closed out a rare five-game homestand inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium, with Jaida Gaskins racking up her fourth-straight double-digit scoring game and Dani Latz picking up her 16th double-double on the year. The decision also snaps a six-game losing streak against the Wolves, who still hold a narrow 22-21 advantage in the all-time series.

The WolfPack held the lead for a majority of the game after Gaskins followed a Maia Ellis jumper with a three-pointer to give the home team a 10-7 lead after three minutes of play. The freshman from Coon Rapids, Minnesota, had the hot hand early, scoring eight of the team's first ten points and sinking two of her game-high four three-pointers. An Amaya Travis bucket a few minutes later put the home team up five, as did Hannah Solie's three-pointer with two minutes to go in the quarter and the Pack ahead 19-14.

A 7-0 run to open the second quarter was part of a bigger 12-2 surge that ended with another Gaskins three ball and gave Madison College its biggest lead of the night at 31-19. Unfortunately, the WolfPack would not score again over the next four-plus minutes as Joliet Junior College (9-11) rattled off 12 consecutive points to tie the game at 31-31. A tip in by Maia Ellis with 1:15 remaining in the half sent the Pack into the locker room up a basket.

A low-scoring third quarter saw Madison College push the differential back to eight points when A'nise Keys converted an offensive rebound into a bucket for a 43-25 lead inside of two minutes to go in the quarter. The Wolves used a three-point play to make it 43-38 entering the fourth. Joliet Junior College kept at it, and eventually tied the game midway through the final quarter at 48-48. Latz, who had been held to six points in the game to that point, connected on back-to-back fadeaways as part of a personal 6-2 run as the game moved inside of two minutes to play. Hannah Solie made it a two possession game with a successful jumper with 33-seconds to go, and then she and fellow first year guard Keelyn Zwirschitz knocked down all four of their combined free throws to seal the win in the final 15 seconds.

Gaskins, a 5'8" guard, scored 11 of her 16 points in the first half and finished with a career-best four 3-pointers. She shot 6 of 13 overall and 4 of 8 from beyond the arc, while also collecting three rebounds and two assists.

Latz, a native of Bloomer, Wisconsin, returned to her double-double form 12 points and 12 rebounds. She was 5 for 15 from the field and sank both of her free throw attempts. Latz also blocked four shots for the third time in the past month.

Solie and Zwirschitz each knocked down a triple en route to nine points a piece, and Maia Ellis recorded a career-best 11 rebounds, to go along with six points, three assists, two blocks, and a steal.

Madison College shot 23 of 62 (37%) on the night, with a 6 for 15 (40%) mark from long range. They were also a perfect 8 for 8 (100%) at the charity stripe, and amassed a 51-40 lead in total rebounds that translated into a 19-14 edge in second chance points.
