The Madison College Athletics Department announced the creation of two scholarships for student-athletes in recognition of
Gary "Big Dog" Breneman. The announcement came as part of a special ceremony during the WolfPack women's and men's basketball doubleheader on Saturday, February 1 inside
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium in celebration of Big Dog's 50 years of service to the college and athletics. The scholarships will each be worth $1,000 and will be awarded to one male and one female student-athlete starting with the 2025-26 academic year.
In addition to the scholarship, the department announced that $1 from every sale of the Big Dog Meal at all future events hosted by Madison College will be donated back into the
Gary "Big Dog" Breneman Scholarship Fund. Supporters are encouraged to make a scholarship contribution in the form of $50 for 50 Years; however, gifts of any amount will be accepted. As for the actual scholarships, the department is still working through the internal processes and criteria for determining how the scholarships will be awarded.
Saturday's announcement and celebration was attended by many former Madison College coaches, student-athletes, staff, and friends. It marked the second of three events planned to celebrate Big Dog's milestone year. In October, the department renamed the concession stand outside Redsten Gym as the Big Dog Concessions, which now includes a plaque about Breneman's time at Madison College and the $6 Big Dog Meal. A third and final celebration is slated for April 19, with a tailgate party and new scoreboard unveiling at Robin Roberts Field. The WolfPack baseball and softball teams are both home that day.
