Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Another late rally comes up short as WolfPack drops home finale

Latz leads with career-best point total, 20th double-double

MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College women's basketball team was the last little bit of home cooking for the 2024-25 season would aid in ending a four-game losing skid; however, an early deficit was too much to overcome as the College of Dupage claimed a 70-56 win in Saturday's Region 4 contest inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. Dani Latz registered her 20th double-double behind a career-high point total in the home finale. The WolfPack still own a 28-19 lead in the all-time series despite five straight setbacks to the Chaparrals. The two teams will play again on Thursday, February 20 in Illinois.

Freshman Maia Ellis opened the game with a three-pointer, and fellow first year guard Jaida Gaskins drained another a few minutes later to give the home team a 10-7 lead. The advantage and the three-pointer were both the last in the game for Madison College, which would miss its remaining 15 attempts from beyond the arc. The College of DuPage (15-12) answered with back-to-back three-pointers of their own to go ahead on the scoreboard. An A'nise Kyes layup cut it back to a one-point game, as did a Latz jumper later in the first quarter, but the Chaps closed the opening ten minutes with a 19-14 lead. Four quick points from Latz again narrowed the deficit to a single point before COD rattled off a 12-2 run for their first double-digit lead. The visitors owned a 37-25 advantage at halftime.

In the third quarter, DuPage posted six consecutive points early and never saw their lead dip below ten. That changed in the fourth quarter with yet another furious WolfPack rally as the home team opened with an 11-2 surge the made it a two-possession game at 54-48 with under six minutes remaining. The Chaparrals responded with six points to go back up by a dozen. Freshman guard Hanna Solie used a successful jumper and two free throws to again bring the differential inside of ten at 63-54 with 1:40 to go, but COD closed the game with a 7-2 stretch.

Latz, a 5'10" native of Bloomer, Wisconsin, posted a career-best 23 points and snared ten rebounds, while also blocking two shots and collecting one steal. She finished 6 for 14 overall and set career-high marks with 11 of 12 free throws. Latz now owns six games with at least 20 points.

Gaskins was the only other player to score in double-figures with 11 points as she made 5 of 17 field goal tries with one 3-pointer. The Coon Rapids, Minnesota, product, also added six boards, a team-high three assists, and a team-leading three steals.

Ellis went for nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds for her fourth game in the last eight outings with double-digit rebounds.

The WolfPack shot 31% (19-60) overall, 10% (2-19) from long range, and 61% (16-26) at the free throw line. The College of DuPage held advantages of 27-18 in points off turnovers, 17-12 in second chance poitns, 23-10 in fast break points, and 22-4 in bench scoring, while the home team was plus-four in points in the paint.
