MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College women's basketball team led wire-to-wire Thursday night, using a fast start and big second quarter to defeat visiting Clarke University JV by a 74-46 margin inside
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. A pair of freshmen led the way with
Serinity Metcalfe notching her third game with 20 or more points in the last five outings and
Maddi DeSmet recording her first career double-double. The win evens the all-time series with the Pride at 1-1.
Metcalfe opened the game with five quick points in the first minute of play and sparking an 11-2 surge for the WolfPack, who closed the first quarter with a 21-12 lead. Still up nine nearly three minutes into the second quarter, Madison College used a Metcalfe steal and layup to ignite 21-2 run that saw Clarke University go scoreless for the final 5:50 of the half. DeSmet scored eight points during the quarter, including the final bucket to make it 46-18 at the break.
The third quarter saw Madison College string together nine consecutive points and build a game-high 37-point lead at 59-22 with less than 90 seconds to play in the quarter. The Pride continued to battle and engineered their own 14-0 burst from the third to the fourth quarters to get within 23 points. The Pack answered with six quick points, including four from sophomore
Dani Latz to regain momentum and hold on for the 28-point victory.
Metcalfe went for 22 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals. The Milwaukee, Wisconsin, native, made 9 of 16 shot attempts and was 2 of 5 from beyond the arc, while also sinking her only two free throw tries.
DeSmet, a forward from Belleville, Wisconsin, came off the bench to contribute a career-best 12 points and secure 11 rebounds, along with three steals and two assists. She converted 6 of 9 field goals on the night.
Jamera Green and Latz also scored in double-figures with 11 and ten points, respectively. Green made two of her four buckets from long range, and also matched Metcalfe with a career-high four steals. Latz added six boards and two blocked shots.
Second year guard
Maia Ellis led a dominating effort on the glass with 13 rebounds for the third time in her career and second game in a row. The WolfPack was better by a 53-25 differential in total rebounds, including 22 on the offensive glass, which contributed to a 20-5 lead in second chance points and a 46-28 advantage in points in the paint. The bench also gave the Pack a boost with a 33-8 edge in scoring over the Pride's reserves.
Madison College shot better than 40% for the fifth time this season, going 30 for 72 (41%) overall and 6 for 21 (28%) from three-point range. They sank 8 of 11 (72%) free throws for the second consecutive game.

Madison College (8-1) continues a string of three games out of four against JV squads from four-year institutions on Saturday, December 6 when they travel 45 miles southeast to play the UW-Whitewater JV. The two programs have not played since the 2008-09 season, and the Warhawks have won all four prior meetings. Tip off is at 1:00 p.m. inside Kachel Gymnasium in Whitewater and will not be streamed live.
