Buzzer beater sends #1 Anoka-Ramsey past Madison College

Win streak ends at six straight despite fourth quarter rally by WolfPack

ROCHESTER, MINN. - Wednesday's neutral site meeting between the Madison College women's basketball team and Anoka-Ramsey Community College came down to the final possessions before the Rams, ranked #1 in the NJCAA Division III Poll, hit a running floater as time expired for a 47-45 win at Rochester Community & Technical College. The WolfPack rallied from down 14 in the second quarter to tie the game, but were unable to come up with a stop defensively on the last possession. Anoka-Ramsey leads the all-time series by an 11-5 tally.

Anoka-Ramsey Community College (9-1) led for nearly all of the first quarter. After going ahead 4-0, the WolfPack answered with a three-pointer from Chloey Bynum and a pair of Maia Ellis free throws to make it 5-4. The Rams responded with a bucket and eventually built a five-point advantage before Dani Latz hit a jumper in the last minute to make it a 13-10 differential.

Anoka-Ramsey dominated the second quarter, using a 14-3 surge to take their largest lead of the game at 27-13. Maddi DeSmet converted a layup and Jamera Green knocked down a triple in the last two minutes to cut the deficit to 27-18 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the WolfPack used another interior hoop by DeSmet to open a 10-2 stretch and pull within three points at 31-28; however, ARCC answered back and rebuilt a double-digit edge as the game moved to the fourth quarter at 43-33. Madison College continued to battle and sophomore Keelyn Zwirschitz scored a layup midway through the final ten minutes to cap a 9-2 run and make it a one-possession game. Three minutes later, it was freshman Serinity Metcalfe draining a clutch three-pointer to tie the game at 45-45.

The WolfPack had several chances to take the lead in the final two minutes; however, Ellis came up empty on an inside shot and two other possessions ended in a turnover. The Rams also had a turnover and a missed three-point try before getting a steal to secure the final possession in regulation. After a timeout, ARCC ran the clock down and guard Anisa Longs spun away from Metcalfe to the free throw line, where she lofted a running shot that sank through the net as the final horn sounded.

Metcalfe and Latz paced the WolfPack with nine points each. Metcalfe scored all of her points from beyond the arc, but struggled to a 3 for 17 shooting night. She also added five rebounds and three assists. Latz was 4 for 7 overall and made one of two free throws, to go along with six boards.

Ellis, a second year from Verona, Wisconsin, reeled in ten rebounds for her fourth double-digit rebound game of the season. She added four points, two assists, and two steals.

Madison College shot 31% (18-58) overall, 19% (6-31) from long range, and 75% (3-4) at the free throw line. The WolfPack won the battle on the glass by a 40-26 margin, resulting in a 12-5 edge in second chance points. Despite that, the Rams posted a 30-16 lead in points in the paint.
