#15 WolfPack rebounds from season's first loss with road win over Rochester

Jones career-high spearheads 60-point second half for Madison College

ROCHESTER, MINN. - Coming off their first loss of the season that halted the best start in program history with nine straight wins, the Madison College men's basketball team blew open a close game with a monster second half to earn a 100-64 victory over Rochester Community & Technical College. Sophomore Ryen Jones scored a career-high 28 points as the WolfPack, who moved up four spots to #15 in the latest NJCAA Division II Poll, reached the 100-point plateau for the fifth time in 11 games. The win narrows the all-time series to a 20-14 count in favor of the Yellowjackets, who had won the previous four meetings.

Rochester Community & Technical College (4-6) held the early advantage with a 9-2 lead, but a quick 11-0 run by the WolfPack gave the visitors their first lead of the day. Madison College eventually led by eight when a Noah Compan layup made it 19-11, and the second year transfer duplicated the feat more than four minutes later when his inside bucket returned the differential to eight at 23-15 with 7:54 to play. The Yellowjackets continued to fight back, closing to within a basket before reaching halftime with the Pack ahead 40-35.

The second half was dominated by Madison College, who scored the first ten points in a run that included a Jones three-pointer and a dunk. It also featured a three-point make by Braylen Blue, as the sophomore guard began to catch fire. A trio of long range hits from George Whaley IV, Carson McCormick, and Jones stretched the lead to 30 points at 71-41 with an 18-3 surge. Madison College put the game completely out of reach with a 19-6 stretch over eight minutes before settling for the 36-point victory.

Jones went for a career-best 28 points on 12 of 16 shooting, which included a 4 for 6 effort from three-point territory. It's the second game with 20 or more points this season for the native of Atlanta, Georgia, who is averaging 21.0 points per game over the last three contests. Jones also added a career-high five steals, to go along with six rebounds, one assist, and a blocked shot.

Blue, a former Madison Memorial HS athlete, scored all 18 of his points in the second half as he went 4 for 5 from distance and sank all six free throw attempts. He added four assists, three rebounds, and two steals.

Compan produced his third double-digit scoring game with 14 points off the bench. The native of La Crosse, Wisconsin, was 6 for 8 overall and 2 for 2 at the stripe, while also registering five boards, one assist, one steal, and one block.

Whaley rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points. McCormick led the team with five assists.

Madison College finished 39 for 66 (59%) for their second-highest shooting percentage of the season and seventh game with a percentage of 50% or better. A season-high 14 three-pointers was part of a season-best 53% (14-26) from distance. They also went 8 for 9 (89%) on free throws. The WolfPack defense forced 21 turnovers, leading to a 33-11 edge in points off turnovers.
