Madison College improves to 2-0 with win at McHenry County

Whaley goes off for career-best 31 points

CRYSTAL LAKE, ILL. - Sophomore guard George Whaley IV enjoyed his best game in a Madison College uniform Tuesday night as he posted a career-high 31 points to lead the WolfPack to a 90-81 victory over McHenry County College in an early-season Region 4 showdown. Four other players joined Whaley as double-figure scorers, with fellow second year Ryen Jones posting his first career double-double. The victory improves the Pack's all-time lead in the head-to-head series to 7-3.

After McHenry County College (0-2) scored the game's first bucket, the WolfPack answered with an 8-0 run that included three-pointers by Carson McCormick and Jones. Another run of seven straight points later in the half gave Madison College it's first double-digit lead at 27-17 with just under eight minutes to play in the half. The advantage grew to a dozen on a Whaley jumper with three minutes to go before the Scots closed the gap to 41-35 at halftime.

Consecutive three-pointers from sophomore Braylen Blue to start the second half ignited a 8-0 burst to push the lead to 14. The home team, however, did not go away as MCC slowly chipped away at the deficit to make it 72-70 with 7:08 remaining. A technical called on the Scots turned the momentum back to Madison, who rebuilt an 86-77 lead as the clock moved inside of a minute to play. Madison College closed out the win by going 6 for 9 at the free throw line.

Whaley, a native of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, finished 10 of 14 overall with one 3-pointer, and was also 10 for 13 at the charity stripe to reach his 31 points and better his previous career-best by eight points. His stat line included a season-high six assists and six rebounds.

Blue, a transfer from Salt Lake Community College, added 14 points as he made three of his four field goals from beyond the arc and added three free throws. The 6'5" guard also led the defensive effort with five steals.

Jones racked up 13 points and a career-high ten rebounds off the bench en route to the double-double. The native of Atlanta, Georgia, was 6 for 10 with a triple and added two blocked shots.

Freshman forward Carter Sullivan finished with a dozen points for the second straight game, and also had five rebounds, three assists, and a steal. He made two shots from distance as part of a 5 for 12 game overall.

McCormick tallied 11 points and four assists.

As a team, the WolfPack made 33 of 69 (47%) shots, 9 of 29 (31%) three-point tries, and 15 of 23 (65%) free throws.
