Metcalfe's late basket sends Madison College to fourth straight win

WolfPack holds off Lake County in key Region 4 victory

GRAYSLAKE, ILL. - The Madison College women's basketball team held off a late charge by the College of Lake County on Tuesday night to secure their fourth straight win with a 64-62 decision in Region 4 competition. Three players scored in double-figures for the WolfPack, with freshman Serinity Metcalfe hitting the game-winning bucket in the final minute. The win gives the Pack an 8-6 advantage in the all-time series, and halts a three-game skid against the Lancers, who are receiving votes in the latest NJCAA Division II Poll.

Madison College led 50-42 to start the fourth quarter and an early offensive rebound by Chloey Bynum led to an easy bucket for Metcalfe to make it a ten-point differential. An 8-0 run later in the quarter by Lake County (8-2) completely erased the WolfPack lead as a pair of free throws tied the score at 60-60. Following a layup by Keelyn Zwirschitz and a rebound tip in by CLC, the game was still even heading into the final minute. Madison College worked the ball around the Lancers zone defense, eventually finding Metcalfe at the free throw line and she knocked down a clutch jumper with 47 seconds to play to take the lead.

Lake County would have two more looks at the basket; however, a turnover and a missed layup that may have been partially blocked by Metcalfe sealed the win.

The back-and-forth game saw the visitors lead for all of the first quarter after jumping out to a 9-2 advantage. Their 19-12 lead to start the second quarter was wiped out as the Lancers put together a 13-5 stretch to take a 25-24 lead. Lake County, the defending Region 4 champions, used a layup in the final minute of the half to take a 32-21 edge into the break.

The third quarter was highlighted by two ties and five lead changes over the first five minutes, with the final tie and lead change coming on a successful Metcalfe and-1. It sparked a 12-0 surge that included five points each from Metcalfe and Dani Latz.

Metcalfe, a guard from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, dropped in 16 points on 7 of 19 shooting with a three-pointer and one free throw. She also added six rebounds, four assists, and a team-best three steals.

Zwirschitz also finished with 16 points and six rebounds as the Antigo, Wisconsin, native, went 7 for 15 from the field with a triple and a free throw.

Latz rounded out the double-digit scorers with her third double-double of the season, posting 11 points and 11 rebounds. Fellow second year Maia Ellis had six points, while also leading the team with a career-high-tying 13 rebounds and a season-best six assists.

Madison College finished 25 for 73 (34%) overall and 6 for 21 (28%) from beyond the arc, while also sinking 8 of 11 (72%) free throws. The WolfPack committed a season-low seven turnovers in the win.
