WolfPack blitzes Harper College early, secures lopsided home victory

Madison College scores first 18 points en route to third straight win

MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College women's basketball team dominated Saturday's Region 4 matchup with Harper College, winning 82-46 after scoring the game's first 18 points inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. Three players scored in double figures, led by the second 20-point performance in the past three games by freshman Serinity Metcalfe. The WolfPack improves to 22-3 all-time against the Hawks, including wins in four straight games and 20 of the last 21 meetings.

Metcalfe got the scoring started with a layup 90 seconds into the game, and she and the WolfPack went on to dominate the first quarter by a 20-1 margin. Keelyn Zwirschitz had seven points, followed by six from Metcalfe, while Harper College (1-6) turned the ball over 14 times and missed all six of its shot attempts.

The lead grew to 26-2 before the Hawks registered their first made basket to snap a 0 for 9 start. Madison took a 34-4 advantage after a three from Chloey Bynum; however, they would not score again for another five minutes as Harper College went on a 10-0 run. The WolfPack took a 37-14 lead into halftime.



The home team continued to pull away in the third quarter, which opened with a 14-0 surge that featured five points each for Bynum and Metcalfe. The differential peaked at 60-16 following a Maddi DeSmet layup, and eventually remained in the 30s throughout an evenly-played fourth quarter.

Metcalfe, a former Shorewood HS athlete, made 8 of 14 shots with one 3-pointer and three free throws to reach 20 points. She also came up with a career-best seven steals and five assists, to go along with five rebounds. Through seven games, Metcalfe is averaging a team-leading 16.3 points per game.

Bynum made three of her four field goals from beyond the arc and was 2 for 2 at the stripe to reach a career-high 13 points. The Green Bay, Wisconsin, native, added four assists, two rebounds, and two steals.

Sophomore Dani Latz tallied ten points and four rebounds, as well as two steals, an assist, and one block. Fellow second year Maia Ellis was tops with eight rebounds, in addition her seven points. 



For the game, Madison College shot 41% (30-72) overall, 32% (8-25) from distance, and 56% (14-25) at the line. The forced 36 turnovers, leading to a 42-10 differential in points off turnovers. The WolfPack also boasts a 21-5 lead in second chance points, a 30-14 advantage in interior scoring, and a 27-12 edge fast break points.

Madison College (6-1) continues the Region 4 schedule on Tuesday, November 25 with a game at the College of Lake County (8-1). The Lancers, who won a Region 4 title last year and were receiving votes in the latest NJCAA Division II Poll, have won three straight and four of the last five against the WolfPack. The all-time series favors Madison College by a narrow 7-6 margin. Tip off in Grayslake, Illinois, is set for 5:15 p.m. and will be live streamed via Hudl.
