GALESBURG, ILL. - Saturday's Region 4 men's basketball game ended with an 82-69 victory Madison College despite trailing Carl Sandburg College by five at halftime. Five players scored in double figures as the WolfPack secured their fifth straight win to open the season for the first time since the 2014-15 season. It's also the fourth consecutive win in head-to-head meetings with the Chargers, who lead the all-time series 6-4.
Madison College converted 29 of 55 (52%) overall for their third consecutive game shooting 50% or better. They were also 7 of 17 (41%) from long range and 17 for 26 (65%) at the free throw line. Carl Sandburg College (3-2) was held to a 19 for 58 (33%) effort overall, including a 7 for 23 (30%) mark beyond the arc, while sinking 24 of 29 (82%) free throws. The Pack also reeled in a 35-24 edge in rebounding.
Second year guard
George Whaley IV led all scorers with 22 points, making 9 of 14 shots overall and one 3-pointer. He also added three free throws and a season-high eight rebounds, to go along with two assists, and two steals.
Fellow sophomore
Ryen Jones came off the bench to drop 19 points on 6 of 11 shooting with one 3-pointer. The wing from Atlanta, Georgia, was also 6 for 10 at the charity stripe, pulled in a team-leading nine rebounds, and dished out a career-best seven assists.
Carson McCormick drained a team-high four shots from three-point territory en route to 16 points.
Braylen Blue, a second year transfer, added 11 points and six boards, while freshman forward
Carter Sullivan scored ten points and secured five rebounds.
