MADISON, WISC. - Thursday's home opener for the Madison College women's basketball team resulted in the season's first loss with a narrow 47-43 setback inside
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. The WolfPack rallied from a slow start to lead at halftime, but were unable to maintain the advantage down the stretch as they three-game season-opening win streak came to an end. Freshman
Serinity Metcalfe led the Pack with her fourth consecutive double-digit scoring performance. The Tritons now lead the all-time series by a 2-0 advantage.
Iowa Central Community College (4-1) scored the game's first ten points until freshman
Maddi DeSmet ended a near four-minute drought for the Pack. The differential stretched to 13 until DeSmet hit another layup to make it 17-6 after the first quarter.
Madison College found its groove in the second quarter, outscoring the Tritons 18-6. After an 8-0 surge, the WolfPack closed the half with a six-point run capped by an
Iyanna Green three-pointer and a
Jamera Green buzzer beating layup to give the home team its first lead of the night at 24-23.
The Tritons responded with seven consecutive points to open the third quarter; however, Metcalfe knocked down two three-pointers in the final two minutes to give Madison a 36-33 edge into the fourth quarter.
The final ten minutes was back-and-forth early as the Pack built a 42-39 lead in the first three minutes. From that point on, ICCC outscored Madison College by an 8-1 margin, with all eight points coming in an 8 for 12 effort at the free throw line. Madison College missed its final ten field goal attempts and committed four turnovers down the stretch.
Metcalfe, a former Shorewood HS athlete, was the only player in double-figures for Madison College, scoring 14 points on 5 of 15 shooting with a pair of three-pointers. The 5'7" guard also made both of her free throw attempts and led the team with three assists, to go along with four rebounds and three steals.
Dani Latz paced the Pack with six rebounds and one block, while sophomore
Chloey Bynum came up with six steals.
