Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

#18 Madison College splits four matches at Parkland College Tournament

WolfPack closes weekend with back-to-back sweeps after pair of four-set losses

CHAMPAIGN, ILL. - The Madison College women's volleyball team worked to overcome some tough challenges at this past weekend's Parkland College Tournament, which resulted in a 2-2 record and snapped an eight-match win streak. The #18-ranked WolfPack, playing their first games without head coach Mallory Stone after the birth of her son, fell in four sets to the #6-ranked and host Cobras, as well as to Danville Area Community College on Friday. They rebounded on Saturday with a pair of sweeps against Lincoln Land Community College and Spoon River College, duplicating the same feat from the Madison College Tournament on September 12.

Match #1 (Friday): #6 Parkland College 3, #18 Madison College 1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-18)

Parkland College (34-3) held the upper hand early in the matchup of two ranked teams as they put together a 7-1 run to break a 10-10 tie in the opening set. Madison College, however, did not fold and won eight of the next ten points to pull even at 19-19. Still tied at 23-all, the Cobras gifted the Pack a set one win with back-to-back attack errors.

Set two again saw Parkland built a 17-11 advantage; however, this time the WolfPack comeback fell short to even the match. Tied at 5-5 early in the third set, the Cobras used a 4-0 burst to eventually win 12 of 18 points for yet another 17-11 advantage. They finished with an 8-1 closing stretch to go up a set. A 7-0 surge in the fourth set put Parkland up 16-9, the same margin by which they would win the set and the match.

Madison College finished with 40 kills, eight aces, five blocks, and 85 digs, which ties for the second-most digs in a match this season.

Ella Vosberg and Makayla Dallas each tallied a dozen kills to lead the WolfPack. Dallas, a native of Valders, Wisconsin, finished with her second double-double as she added a 12 digs. Sam Schultz tacked on eight kills, ten digs, and a team-best two blocks.

Setter Allie Andrews had 37 assists and 11 digs for her fifth double-double. The Darlington, Wisconsin, native also led the team with three aces. Libero Avery Agnew tracked down 25 digs and served up two aces, while sophomore Cora Webster added 16 digs.

Madison College is 1-6 all-time against Parkland College.

Match #2 (Friday): Danville Area Community College 3, #18 Madison College 1 (27-25, 25-15, 21-25, 25-23)

The day's second match opened with a back-and-forth first set, which was tied at 21-21 when Ella Vosberg gave Madison College the lead with a successful attack. Allie Andrews followed it up with an ace, and after a net violation and a timeout by Danville Area Community College (10-20), the Jaguars staved off three set points to pull even at 24-24 and eventually held match point on a WolfPack hitting error. A DACC attack error prolonged the match before back-to-back kills won the set for Danville.

The Jaguars slowly pulled away in the second set for a ten-point win; however, Vosberg bookended a 5-0 run for Madison in the third set to take an 11-6 lead. Despite several attempts by DACC, the Pack never relinquished the advantage to force a fourth set. Another Vosberg kill in the fourth put Madison ahead 20-17 before the Jaguars closed out the match with an 8-3 surge to win the first meeting all-time between the two programs.

The WolfPack racked up 39 kills, 11 aces, three blocks, and 84 digs. It's their fifth match of the season with 80 or more digs.

Vosberg, a Cuba City, Wisconsin, native, amassed 15 kills, while Caylee Coggins and Makayla Dallas each had seven. Allie Andrews had 24 assists and three aces, and sophomore Tricia Klum added 13 assists and 11 digs for her first double-double of the season. Coggins matched Andrews with three aces of her own.

Avery Agnew, a libero/defensive specialist from Milton, Wisconsin, led the defensive effort with 25 digs, tying her second-highest output of the season. Dallas added 16 digs, followed by 14 from Sam Schultz.

Match #3 (Saturday): #18 Madison College 3, Lincoln Land Community College 0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-21)

The tournament's second day produced much different results right from the start as Madison College jumped out to a 10-3 lead against Lincoln Land Community College (16-14). The Loggers eventually tied the score at 16-16; however, the Pack was ready to respond and did so with a 5-0 run to eventually win by six. Another fast start and a 10-3 lead in the second set, which also featured a 7-0 surge that built an 11-point advantage.

The third set provided some drama with a 19-19 score late, followed by a LLCC attack error and a Sam Schultz kill for a two-point lead and a Loggers timeout. Schultz eventually came through with another kill to win the match in three sets.

Schultz, an Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, native, was the only player with double-digit kills as she tallied 11 kills and a .296 attack percentage. The versatile freshman added 17 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Ella Vosberg had eight kills and Caylee Coggins added seven.

Allie Andrews and Tricia Klum shared setter duties, with Andrews finishing with 19 assists and Klum with 16. Avery Agnew came through with 18 digs from her libero position. Makayla Dallas was tops at the service line with four aces, while Coggins matched a career-best with three aces.

Overall, the WolfPack produced 40 kills, 11 aces, three blocks, and 63 digs.

The win improved Madison College's all-time record against Lincoln Land to 3-5, with two wins this season.

Match #4 (Saturday): #18 Madison College 3, Spoon River College 0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-18)

Madison College also picked up its second win of the year against Spoon River College (8-21), moving the all-time record to 4-0 against the Snappers. The match opened with an early 9-2 lead for the WolfPack, who also used a 9-1 closing stretch to win the first set handily. Set two saw the Pack build a 22-13 advantage, while the third and final set was tight late at 19-18 until Madison rattled off six straight points for the win. That final run included back-to-back Ella Vosberg kills and consecutive Sam Schultz aces before Rowan Harder terminated an attack and the match.

The WolfPack tallied 33 kills, three blocks, 57 digs, and a dozen aces to mark their 15th match this season with ten or more aces. They hit at a .241 efficiency for their highest team attack percentage of the weekend.

The offense was paced by Vosberg with nine kills, followed by seven from Dallas and six by Coggins.

Tricia Klum, a setter from Chaseburg, Wisconsin, produced 14 assists, followed by nine from fellow second year Sammy Johnson.

Avery Agnew had 18 digs, followed by 14 for Sam Schultz. Schultz also tied Caylee Coggins with three aces.
