OAK CREEK, WISC. - Wednesday's regular season finale provided plenty of reason for celebration for the Madison College men's soccer team, who used a season-high goal output to rout in-state and Region 4 rival Milwaukee Area Technical College by an 11-0 final to cap the program's second undefeated regular season. The WolfPack, who jumped to #12 in the latest NJCAA, finished the regular season without a loss for the first time since 2007 and likely locked up the top seed in the upcoming Region 4 Tournament. Seven different players scored goals in the game, led by multi-goal efforts from
Hudson Nielsen and
Johan Lopez as the Pack improved to 52-15-2 all-time against the Stormers.
The scoring barrage started in the 6' when a redirected corner kick rolled right to Lopez, and the freshman took advantage with a scoring strike to the top of the net. Nielsen's career day got underway with a 16' goal when
Dan Fox's pass into the penalty area was punched out by the Milwaukee Area Technical College (0-11-1) goalkeeper, and Nielsen was ready with a sweeping kick back into the goal.
A free kick by Fox in the 37' was deflected by the right leg of fellow sophomore
JJ Espinosa to make it 3-0. Four minutes later, a save by the MATC 'keeper on a shot by freshman
Josh Kiltz was rebounded by first year defender
Guilherme Amaral and sent into the goal. The final tally of the first half marked the first career goal for sophomore
Tristan Steinhoff. Off a deflected free kick, midfielder
Justyn Blair played the ball across the front of the net to Steinhoff, and the native of Hamburg, Germany, tapped in the uncontested goal to make it 5-0 at halftime.
The goals kept coming in the second half, starting with Lopez converting a
Geo Prado pass to secure his second two-goal match of the season. The former Baraboo HS athlete owns eight goals on the year. Following that 47' goal, sophomore
Cole Rogers made it 7-0 in the 50' with his ninth goal of the season. Freshman
Carson Stebbins earned his first of two assists in the match.
The match turned into the
Hudson Nielsen Show over the next five minutes as the Huntley, Illinois, native tallied three goals, one of which was assisted by
Rodrigo Lasso. The career-high four goals makes the forward the eighth player in program history to reach that mark. Nielsen leads the team with 11 goals on the season and has 21 for his career, which ties him for seventh all-time.
The final goal of the match was netted by sophomore
Geo Prado, who kicked in a pass from Stebbins to score his first collegiate goal in 28 matches played by the All-Region 4 selection from last season.
The match ended via mercy rule after 70 minutes and with the WolfPack owning a 32-1 lead in shots and a 19-1 advantage in shots on goal.Â
Freshman goalkeeper
Finn Dillon earned a clean sheet with one save for his second win of the season. It's the seventh shutout for the WolfPack this season.
