GLEN ELLYN, ILL. - The Madison College men's soccer team will try to complete its second unbeaten regular season this week after securing a 2-1 victory over the College of DuPage in a Region 4 match on Sunday. The #14-ranked WolfPack used goals from
Alfonso Mendez and
JJ Espinosa to built a two-goal advantage en route to their fifth consecutive win as they improve to 14-0-1. The Pack has not been without a loss in the regular season since going 12-0-1 in 2007. The victory also marks the 12th straight for Madison against the Chaparrals, improving their lead in the all-time series to 20-12-4.
The match was scoreless for the first 41 minutes when Madison College earned a corner kick. Sophomore transfer
Dan Fox played the ball into freshman
Guilherme Amaral outside of the penalty area, and when Amaral's kick towards the net was deflected by to Fox, the defender lifted a centering pass into the goalie area and freshman midfielder
Alfonso Mendez redirected it with a header into the net. The goal is the first collegiate scoring strike for the Waukesha, Wisconsin, native.
Still up 1-0 in the 62' minute, the WolfPack struck again. Second year midfielder
Rodrigo Lasso displayed some crafty dribbling skills along the left side of the penalty box as he ventured towards the endline. His moves drew the defense towards the left post, so when his pass sailed over the defense, Espinosa was all alone by the right post to head it in. Espinosa, a native of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, owns four goals on the season and has scored two in the past three matches. The assist for Lasso, another former Beaver Dam HS athlete, ties him for the team lead with five helpers on the season.
The College of DuPage (8-4-2) scored with an assisted goal in the 84' to narrow the gap to one. The WolfPack defense was able to prevent any further Chaparrals shots to secure the win.
Madison College dominated the ball with a 21-6 advantage in total shots, which included an 8-3 differential in shots on goal. They also held a 15-1 lead in corner kicks.
Freshman
Caylen Coventry made two saves in the win. Sophomore
Hudson Nielsen led all players with ten shots and five shots on goal.
