MADISON, WISC. - After failing to win the opening set despite holding set point, Madison College regrouped to earn a 3-1 (24-26, 25-16, 25-14, 25-15) victory over in-state and Region 4 rival Milwaukee Area Technical College on a busy night inside
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. The WolfPack, ranked #16 in the latest NJCAA Division II Poll, averaged 12.0 kills per set, while the defending region champion Stormers were limited to a 8.0 kills per set. The victory is the 43rd consecutive over Milwaukee Tech and gives Madison a 97-29-3 lead in the all-time series.
Early kills by freshmen
Sam Schultz and
Makayla Dallas gave Madison College a 3-0 lead in the first set, and they maintained the lead until it was 14-11. Milwaukee Tech went on a 5-0 run to take their first lead of the night. Down 20-17, the WolfPack used a net fault and an
Allie Andrews ace to ignite a four-point surge. Another ace from
Avery Agnew made it set point at 24-22, and two plays later, an apparent WolfPack kill was reversed via a successful replay challenge and the Stormer took advantage with a 3-0 run to win in extra points.
The rest of the match belonged to Madison. The home team led 5-1 to start the second set, and then engineered a 7-0 run midway through the set to pull away. First year outside hitter
Ella Vosberg posted six kills in the second set to lead the Pack, who then then a 6-4 deficit in set three into a 16-8 differential as MATC-Milwaukee called their second timeout. The 11-point win in the third was followed by a fourth and final set that was tight through the first 24 points. With a 13-11 advantage, Madison followed two kills each by Dallas and
Caylee Coggins into another Stormers timeout. An 8-3 closing stretch capped by one final Vosberg kill ended the match in four sets.
Vosberg, a native of Cuba City, Wisconsin, racked up 14 kills to lead all players. She now boasts 21 matches with double-digit kills. Dallas finished with a dozen kills, followed by Schultz with ten. Schultz, a former Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, led the team with a career-high seven aces, to go along with eight digs.
Allie Andrews, a freshman setter, tallied 45 assists, 12 digs, three aces, and two blocks. The double-double is her eighth this fall. Libero
Avery Agnew tracked down 34 digs, while
Cora Webster added 11 digs and three aces.
The match was played in front of several youth teams during Youth Night, as well as in front of two professional volleyball players with former Wisconsin Badgers star Sydney Hilley and Sun Prairie native Claire Chaussee, who were on-hand to sign autographs and promote the upcoming
Athletes Unlimited Pro Volleyball Championship in Madison from October 23-November 2.
