Madison College claimed wins over #11 Sauk Valley, Sandburg to extend win streak to five

MADISON, WISC. - Friday's Madison College Quad opened with a Top-20 battle between two teams ranked in the NJCAA Division II Poll, and when the day was done, Madison College had extended their current win streak to five matches with two victories on the H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium floor. The #18-ranked WolfPack defeated #11-ranked Sauk Valley Community College by a 3-1 final before sweeping Carl Sandburg College. The Skyhawks went 1-1 with a three-set win over Milwaukee Area Technical College (24-6), who also swept CSC.

Match #1: #18 Madison College 3, #11 Sauk Valley Community College 1 (29-27, 16-25, 25-22, 25-20)

Sauk Valley Community College (21-7) sent an early message with a quick 4-0 lead in the opening set; however, Madison answered with six straight points that included a Makayla Dallas block and kill on back-to-back points and consecutive kills from Sam Schultz. The lead grew to as much as five at 15-10 before the Skyhawks put together a 10-3 surge. The WolfPack eventually regained the lead and had set point at 24-22. It would be the first of six set points for the home team until freshman Avery Agnew served up an ace for the extra points win.

The Skyhawks engineered a 6-0 burst midway through the second set to create some separation, and then closed it out with a 7-1 stretch to even the match at a set each.

Schultz and Agnew got the third set off to a quick start with a kill and ace to make it 3-0, and fellow first year Caylee Coggins took over with kill and two blocks in the early stages. Several SVCC attack errors put the Pack up 14-6. The differential did narrow to two at 23-21 before Madison went on to win by three with another Coggins kill.

A 6-1 start for the WolfPack in the fourth set proved to be the difference as the home team grew their lead to as much as 11 before claiming the five-point victory.

Madison College posted 52 kills and a .168 attack percentage for the match, which included 16 kills in the opening set and 15 more in the final. They also amassed six aces. Defensively, the Pack racked up 11 blocks and 91 digs, which both ranks as their second-highest total in a match this season.

Three players reached double digits in kills, led by Schultz' 15 and a team-high 47 attack attempts. She added 15 digs for her seventh double-double of the season.

Coggins, a native of Columbia, Missouri, came through with career-best numbers on offense and defense as she terminated 11 kills with a team-best .476 efficiency and registered seven blocks. She also added a pair of aces. Ella Vosberg tallied ten kills and hit at a .231 clip.
