KANKAKEE, ILL. - A slow start to Saturday's Region 4 women's basketball game proved to be too much for Madison College to overcome in a 70-52 loss at Kankakee Community College. Freshman
Aubrey Maass was the lone player to score in double figures as she reached the 20-point plateau for the third time in the last four games. The matchup marked the first meeting all-time between the WolfPack and the Cavaliers.
Kankakee Community College (9-12) scored the game's first 13 points as the WolfPack missed their first seven shots before Maass converted a layup as the clock approached five minutes to play in the first quarter. Despite narrowing the gap to eight during the first quarter, Madison College trailed 21-8 at the end of the first quarter.
The Cavaliers grew their advantage to 19 as they opened the second quarter with an 8-2 run. The Pack answered with a 13-5 surge to close the half down by 11 at 34-23.Â
Madison College was unable to trim their deficit inside of double-digits throughout the second half. A Maass triple early in the third quarter made it 37-26; however, KCC pushed the lead to 20 at the end of the quarter with a 8-0 burst.
The run went to ten straight points when the Cavaliers scored to start the fourth quarter to take a 59-37 lead. Madison College put together an impressive run in the fourth quarter, scoring 12 of the next 13 points to make it 60-49. Unfortunately, that's as close as the Pack would get as KCC ended the game with an 8-1 stretch.
Maass, a former Pardeeville HS athlete, converted 8 of 15 shots from the floor and was 3 for 5 from three-point range, while also sinking 3 of 4 free throws. The 5'7" guard has scored in double-figures in six straight games, with a scoring average of 18.1 points during that stretch. Maass also finished with three rebounds and an assist.
First year forward
Dani Latz posted eight points and a team-high eight rebounds, bringing to an end a string of 12 straight double-doubles.
Hannah Solie also scored eight points, while
Keelyn Zwirschitz registered seven points and a team-leading six assists.Â
Madison College finished the game shooting 33% (17-51) overall, 26% (4-15) from long range, and 64% (14-22) at the stripe. Kankakee Community College secured 11 more rebounds, leading to a 14-0 differential in second chance points. The Cavaliers were also plus-22 in points in the paint and plus-eight in points off turnovers.Â
