MADISON, WISC. - A sequence of three consecutive three-pointers in a 90-second span was enough to send Marshalltown Community College to a 63-53 win over the Madison College women's basketball team in a non-region contest Thursday inside
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. Freshman
Dani Latz picked up her 13th double-double of season; however, she was the only WolfPack player to score in double-figures as they dropped their fourth consecutive game. The meeting with the Tigers was the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Madison College got off to a slow start, falling behind 11-2 after the Tigers went on an early 9-0 run. After a
Keelyn Zwirschitz three-pointer ended the run, the WolfPack pulled within 18-14 before a late bucket for Marshalltown Community College (12-8) made it a six-point differential after ten minutes. The teams traded buckets for most of the second quarter until the home team held the Tigers without a basket for the final 4:30 and generated eight straight points to take a 31-30 lead after halftime thanks to a
Hannah Solie layup.
The third quarter was a back-and-forth affair with two ties and three lead changes. Trailing 39-36, the Pack used back-to-back field goals from
Aubrey Maass and
Amaya Travis, followed by a Solie three-pointer to assume the largest lead of the quarter at 43-39. Unfortunately, Marshalltown answered an 18-2 surge from the third quarter into the fourth and it was capped by the three straight makes from beyond the arc to give the Tigers a game-high 57-45 advantage. Madison College was unable to string together enough baskets or stops the rest of the game, getting as close as eight with 5:34 remaining, but did not score for more than nine minutes until a late Latz layup provided the final differential.
Latz posted 20 points and ten rebounds, marking her fourth game with 20 or more points, including three in the last four outings. The forward from Bloomer, Wisconsin, was an efficient 9 for 13 from the floor and 2 for 3 at the free throw line.Â
Fellow first year forward
Amaya Travis came off the bench to match a career-best with eight points on 4 of 4 shooting. The Milwaukee, Wisconsin, native, also had four assists, three rebounds, two steals, and two blocks.
Zwirschitz led the WolfPack with six assists, to go along with six boards and five points.
Madison College was 22 for 49 (45%) overall and 3 of 16 (18%) beyond the arc, but struggled with a 6 for 15 (40%) from the free throw line. The Tigers shot 47% (27-57) from the field, 34% (8-23) from distance, and 25% (1-4) at the stripe. Marshalltown owned a 37-27 edge in rebounding, which led to a 6-1 advantage in points off turnovers. They were also plus-six in points in the paint.
