PALOS HILLS, ILL. - A late comeback attempt by the Madison College men's soccer team fell short Saturday in a 2-1 setback against Region 4 foe Moraine Valley Community College. Freshman João Forte provided the WolfPack's lone goal. The Cyclones have won all three meetings between the two programs, including another 2-1 decision in Madison last fall.
Moraine Valley Community College (2-0) struck first with a goal in the 24' on a rebound shot off a corner kick. The Cyclones initial play from the corner was punched back out by WolfPack goalkeeper
Victor Dalum; however, it went right to the waiting right foot of a MVCC's Emmanuel Calixto, who sent a shot towards the far post that Dalum got a hand on before it hit the net.
Still a one-goal differential throughout much of the second half, the Cyclones added an 83' insurance goal. After a steal deep in the Madison College offensive zone, MVCC moved the ball up the right side of the pitch. A centering pass to the top of the penalty box was received by a Jamal Morad of Moraine Valley, surrounded by three WolfPack players. An apparent mis-kick by Morad found its way through the legs of a Madison College defender and bounced past a lunging Dalum to a 2-0 lead.
Roughly three minutes later, the comeback effort took hold - and the shutout avoided - as a long pass down the center of the field was misplayed by a MVCC defender, leaving the Pack with a two-on-one situation against the home goalie. Forte, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, pushed a left-footed kick by the falling 'keeper for his first collegiate goal. Madison College was unable to generate another shot over the remaining four minutes.
Moraine Valley registered a 13-8 lead in total shots and a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Freshmen
Rodrigo Lasso and Hudson Nielson each had two shots, with Nielsen leading the offensive effort with two shots on goal. Forte's goal came off his lone shot attempt of the afternoon.
Dalum finished with three saves and two goals allowed, while the MVCC goalkeeper had three saves and one allowed.
