WolfPack picks up third consecutive win, second shutout

Madison College defense blanks Chiefs, offense produces season-high four goals

SUGAR GROVE, ILL. - The Madison College women's soccer team has followed up its season-opening loss with a three-match win streak after Saturday's 4-0 decision over Waubonsee Community College in a Region 4 match. Three different players found the back of the net, while the WolfPack prevented the Chiefs from putting a single shot on net over the full 90 minutes. The victory gives the Pack a 2-0 lead in the all-time series, which includes a 5-1 home win last fall.

Madison College owned a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the match, thanks to sophomore Atziry Ocampo. After the WolfPack passed the ball up the pitch, it found its way to Ocampo on a pass from Camille Gilbertson. Ocampo, a native of Monroe, Wisconsin, got off an initial shot that was blocked by the Waubonsee Community College (2-4) goalkeeper. The forward stuck with the play, relocated the ball, and was able to attempt another shot that got past the GK for her first goal of the season and sixth of her career.

Still 1-0 entering the final few minutes of the first half, Gilbertson, a second year midfielder from Cottage Grove, Wisconsin, lifted a perfect pass from the right sideline to the front of the goal. That's where freshman Sophia Garcia was waiting to head it into an empty net for the first career goal for the Whitewater, Wisconsin, product. The 42' goal made it 2-0 entering halftime.

Freshman Grace Brown put the game away for good with a pair of second half goals, the first scores of her collegiate career. The first came in the 53' after a corner kick. Brown took a pass from midfielder Suzy Hinds Cruz just outside the goalie box, and despite three defender charging at her, delivered a scoring strike the soared over the goalkeeper's head and hands to make it 3-0.

The same duo teamed up again in the 71' to complete the day's scoring effort. Hinds Cruz raced the ball up the left side before spinning around to drop a pass at the top of the penalty box for Brown, who made a quick move to her left to escape a defender before unleashing a left-footed kick back across the goal and inside the right post.

Madison College finished with a 20-3 lead in total shots and an 11-0 advantage in shots on goal. Brown, a former Janesville Craig HS athlete, led the way with five total shots and three shots on goal en route to her first career multi-goal performance.

Freshman goalkeeper Kaelyn Welch recorded her second clean sheet in the last three matches as she worked the full 90 minutes without allowing a goal.
