WolfPack shuts out Riverland for season's first victory

Uhlmann, Unger tally one goal each

MADISON, WISC. - A single goal in each half of play Wednesday afternoon was enough to earn the Madison College men's soccer team their first win of the season, defeating Riverland Community College by a 2-0 score at Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East. Sophomore Carter Uhlmann and freshman Jacob Unger each scored their first goal of the season, while sophomore goalkeepers Ayden White and Enzo Guimarães combined for the season's first clean sheet. The WolfPack is now 3-1 all-time against the Blue Devils, whom they have not played since 2000.

Madison College went on the offensive right from the opening kick, earning four corner kicks and recording three shots in the game's first 14 minutes. As the 16' was nearing a close, the persistence paid off as throw in led to a beautiful touch pass from first year forward João Forte to a wide open Uhlmann, who beat the goalkeeper for his fourth career goal.

The WolfPack continued to the put pressure on the Riverland (0-1-0) defense throughout the first half, which ended with a 1-0 differential. That score remained despite a sizable advantage for the home team in total shots and shots on goal, until Madison College added an insurance goal in the 74'. Freshman Tristan Steinhoff lofted a pass to the top of the penalty area, where sophomore forward John Soberon-Chehade sent an impressive header in the direction of Unger. The defender from Sussex, Wisconsin, used one kick to send the ball over the arms of the goalkeeper and bouncing into the net.

Madison College finished with a impressive 26-2 advantage in total shots for the match, as well as an 11-1 discrepancy in shots on goal. Unger and fellow freshman JJ Espinosa each had four total shots. Forte, Felipe Dewes, and Soberon-Chehade all tied for team-high honors with two shots on goal.

In net, White, a native of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and Guimarães, who hails from Sao Paulo, Brazil, saw their first collegiate action in the combined shutout. Guimarães was credited with the team's lone save.
