OAK CREEK, WISC. - The Madison College baseball team made history Wednesday, recording their 100th all-time win over long-time rival Milwaukee Area Technical College with the completion of a home-and-home series sweep. The #16-ranked WolfPack turned a big first inning into a 7-1 road decision. Madison College now owns a 100-16 lead in the all-time series, with the Stormers becoming the first opponent in program history in which the WolfPack has amassed 100 wins.
After a walk and a base hit put a pair of runners aboard in the top of the first, sophomore
Payton Frehner delivered a single up the middle to plate
Jake Petasek for a 1-0 lead. Two batters later it was freshman
James Duncan coming through with a line drive to center that scored Charlier Marion. An additional error on the play allowed Frehner to race in from third for a three-run advantage.
The WolfPack stranded the bases loaded in the fourth inning, and Milwaukee Area Technical College (18-26) turned that defensive momentum into a run in the home half with a triple and a single against starter
Liam Stumpf.
Madison College then built a 6-1 differential in the fifth. Frehner scored the first run on a wild pitch, and both
Chris Calico and
Howie Rickett produced a RBI. In all the inning featured a hit by pitch, an error, a wild pitch, a walk, two singles, and a double.
A single and two walks loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, giving Frehner another opportunity to drive in a run. He did just that with an infield single to bring home Rickett for a 7-1 lead.
Frehner was one of five WolfPack batters to record multiple hits, going 2 for 4 and leading the team with two runs scored and two runs batted in. In the two games against the Stormers, the Waukesha, Wisconsin, native was a combined 5 for 7 with five runs and three RBI.
Calico, a native of West Salem, Wisconsin, produced a career-high three hits, to go along with a run scored and one driven in. Rickett and Duncan also each had a RBI and a run scored, with Rickett's coming off two hits and Duncan's on one base knock and a walk.
The trio of Stumpf (3-2),
Evan Iwinski, and
Sam Steuber combined to limit MATC-Milwaukee to one run and six hits. Stumpf, a righthander from Mineral Point HS, struck out a career-high eight batters as he worked seven strong innings and scattered five hits and a walk. He was tagged for the lone run before handing the reigns over to Iwinski and Steuber for an inning each in relief. Both recorded a strikeout and did not allow a run.
