MADISON, WISC. - Friday's Region 4 baseball doubleheader between Madison College and Waubonsee Community College saw each team come away with a victory at
Robin Roberts Field. The #16-ranked WolfPack dominated the opener with a 16-3 decision in the opener; however, the Chiefs responded with an 8-3 win to split the twin bill. The all-time series still favors the Pack by an 18-11 margin with the WCC win snapping a seven-game win streak for Madison.
Game #1: #16 Madison College 16, Waubonsee Community College 3 (5 innings)
A leadoff walk to
Dayton Rozinski-Hicks set the stage for a fast start by the home team, who capitalilzed with two runs on two hits and two walks.
Charlie Schau drove in the game's first run with a sacrifice fly to center, and two batters later,
Will Johannes drove a line drive to left for a run-producing single that plated
Charlie Marion. Another two-run frame in the second made it a 4-0 lead for the WolfPack.
Jalen Gellings singled on a bunt to score
Marcelino Alonso, and Marion followed with the team's second successful sac fly as Rozinski-Hicks tagged up from third to score.
Waubonsee cut their deficit in half with two runs in the top of the third after three straight singles off starter
Eamonn Mulhern loaded the bases and back-to-back ground outs each drove in a run. Doubles by Johannes and Alonso combined to make it a 5-2 game through three, but WCC wasn't going away, scoring another run in the top of the fourth to keep it a two-run contest.
Everything changed in the bottom half of the fourth as Madison College exploded for 11 runs on eight hits and six walks.
Payton Frehner, Johannes, and Alonso each batted in a run before
Jake Petasek came through with a two-run double to center for a 10-3 lead. Two batters later it was Gellings up with the bases loaded, and the first year infielder from Eden, Wisconsin, cleared them with a two-bagger to the left field wall. Following the second out of the inning, Schau produced a line drive hit up the middle to score another run for a 14-3 advantage. Another single by Frehner followed by three consecutive walks forced in the game's final runs.
The offensive explosion was led by Johannes and Alonso, as each finished with three hits, which set a new career-best for Alonso. The Reedsburg, Wisconsin, native also had three runs batted in and two runs scored, while Johannes produced two of each. Gellings led the team four RBI as he went 2 for 3 with a run scored. Schau and Frehner combined for four hits, three runs scored, and three runs batted in.
Mulhern, a former Madison East HS athlete, improved to 2-0 on the season with 4.2 innings of work and three strikeouts. He allowed thee earned runs on seven hits and two walks.
Kobe Vosberg recorded the final out in the fifth for the run-ruled win.
Game #2: Waubonsee Community College 8, #16 Madison College 3
Waubonsee Community College (13-18) came out swinging in the finale, pushing in four runs in the game's first half inning. A single, an error, and a walk loaded the bases for the Chiefs, who then got a two-run single and scored a third run on a wild pitch. A fielder's choice two batters later accounted for the final run. They pushed the differential to 7-0 in the second after loading the bases again against starter
Camden Broske, and then used a single and a two-run double to put three more runs on the board.
Madison College (22-9) had an opportunity to score their first runs in the fourth with the bases loaded and two outs; however, freshman
Chris Calico's line drive to right center was snared out of the air to end the threat. The Chiefs added one more run in the fifth on an error by third baseman
Jake Petasek on a pop fly in foul territory.Â
Trailing by eight runs entering the bottom of the seventh, the WolfPack engineered a two-out rally with three consecutive singles, the last of which from
Will Johannes drove in two runs. An error by the catcher during the next at-bat allowed
Payton Frehner to race in from third to make it 8-3. Unfortunately, freshman
James Duncan flew out on the very next pitch to end the game.
Frehner, a native of Waukesha, Wisconsin, produced half of the WolfPack's hits with a 2 for 3 game and yielded a run scored. Johannes led the team with two runs batted in on one hit.
Broske (1-1) took the loss with six earned runs allowed on eight hits and five walks over 3.2 innings. He struck out one before fellow first year
Ryan Karst took over for 1.1 innings and surrendered one unearned run on two walks and three K's. Sophomore
Eli Hoyt worked the final two frames of scoreless baseball and fanned five of the six batters faced.
