MADISON, WISC. - Madison College wrapped up a six-game homestand on Tuesday with a resounding 14-0 blanking of in-state rival Milwaukee Area Technical College in seven innings in a Region 4 baseball game at
Robin Roberts Field. Freshman
James Duncan hit his second home run of the season as part of a five-RBI day, and first year starter
Noah Musolf fanned eight to get the win. The WolfPack, who earlier in the week moved up to #16 in the NJCAA Division II Poll, are 99-16 all-time against the Stormers, and the two teams will complete their home-and-home series on Wednesday.
The scoring started in the second inning with a two-out rally that generated four runs on four hits, one walk, and an error. Duncan's productive afternoon began with a run-scoring single to center that drove in
Will Johannes. Sophomores
Dayton Rozinski-Hicks and
Nick Nowak followed with singles of their own to plate
Grant Ross and Duncan, respectively, to make it a three-run lead. An error by the third baseman trying to field
Jalen Gellings' grounder kept the inning alive as Rozinski-Hicks raced in from third.
After the Stormers stranded a pair of runners in the top of the third, Madison pounced with three more runs. Ross lined a single to left to bring in
Payton Frehner. Duncan dropped down a sacrifice bunt to score Johannes. And Rozinski-Hicks came through with his second hit and second RBI with a two-out liner to left that plated Ross.
Up 7-0, the WolfPack kept their foot on the gas in the fourth and added three more runs to their total. Frehner came up with two on and one out, and drove a line drive to the wall in right for a double that brought home
Charlie Marion. Then Johannes grounded a single back up the middle with
Charlie Schau and Frehner scoring from third and second, respectively.
Madison completed the scoring in the sixth with another four-run frame. Back-to-back walks put runners on for pinch hitter
Chris Calico, and the first year outfielder from West Salem, Wisconsin, delivered a run-scoring base hit to right, scoring Frehner. One pitch later, Duncan, a transfer from Illinois State University, pulled a home run beyond the right field fence to make it 14-0.
Duncan finished 2 for 2 with a home run and a walk. The native of Sussex, Wisconsin, drove in a career-best five runs and scored two more. Frehner, a former Waukesha North HS athlete, was tops on the team with three hits, including two for extra bases, three runs scored, and one RBI. Johannes registered three runs scored and two batted in with a hit and two walks.
On the mound, Musolf (3-0) remained perfect on the season with his best and longest outing. The Franklin, Wisconsin, native, worked six innings and struck out a career-high eight batters. He limited MATC-Milwaukee to three hits and issued four walks before sophomore
Allen Leitner took over to close out the run-ruled win in the seventh. Leitner walked one and struck out two in his fourth appearance of the season.
