MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College softball team split a home Region 4 doubleheader on Saturday against Waubonsee Community College as they won the opener 11-3 in six innings before falling 4-3 to the Chiefs in the second game at
Robert D. Goodman Softball Field. Freshman
Brooke Anderson led the charge in game one with a career-best four hits, while the loss in the second game snapped a five-game winning streak. The WolfPack is 18-14 all-time against WCC.
Game #1: Madison College 11, Waubonsee Community College 3 (6 innings)
Neither team was able to score a run in the first inning, and then Madison College used four hits and two errors in the second to take a 4-0 lead.
Jenna Redders led off with a double and
Brooke Anderson followed with a single, and two batters later it was an error on the catcher during a double steal that tallied the game's first run.
Brooke Steinhorst then drove in Anderson with a single to center. With two outs in the inning, freshman outfielder
Abbey Remington lined a double to left that brought Steinhorst and
Karis Paulson in for a four-run advantage.
Yet another round of a Redders double and Anderson single set the stage in the third for another run, which the WolfPack took advantage of with a
Madison Coubal ground out to second that allowed Redders to race home.
Leading 5-0, Anderson's hot bat smashed a triple to right in the fifth, and a pop out in foul territory down the right field line by Coubal was good enough for Anderson to tag up and score. Three consecutive two-out singles loaded the bases for Remington, who grounded the fourth straight base knock past the shortstop to plate pinch runner
Maya Dzick.
Waubonsee got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth, cutting the Pack's 7-0 advantage down to four runs as they scored three on three hits and a walk.
The Madison scoring concluded in the sixth with four more runs to earn the run-rule decision. The inning started with a Schultz double, followed by a Redders walk and an Anderson single to load the bases. Coubal then drew a four-pitch walk to force in a run. After Redders was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice,
Karis Paulson scored two runs with a single to right. The game ended two batters later as Remington reached on a grounder to short and Steinhorst was able to touch home.
Anderson, a native of Plain, Wisconsin, was a perfect 4 for 4 at the plate for her first career four-hit game, and scored a team-high three runs for the second time this season.
Remington, an Elkhorn, Wisconsin, product, registered her fifth three-hit game of the season whlie driving in a career-high four runs.
The trio of Redders, Steinhorst, and Paulson all had two hits each. Paulson drove in two runs and scored one, while Steinhorst scored twice and had one RBI. Redders touch home twice.
First year righthander
Kendall Weik earned the win and improved to 8-2 with six innings of work. She allowed three earned runs on four hits and two walks. The former Phillips HS athlete also struck out three.
Game #2: Waubonsee Community College 4, Madison College 3
Madison College (19-6) had their chances in the day's second game, but utimately it was Waubonsee Community College (6-12) that came through in the clutch. The Chiefs took a 1-0 lead in the first half inning after a pair of singles against starter
Ella Wyskochil set up a fielder's choice scoring opportunity.
The visitors lead improved to 2-0 in the third after an error by
Abbey Remington in center allowed the leadoff hitter to reach third. A single to right followed and the Chiefs had some breathing room.
The WolfPack got the run back in the home half of the third when sophomore
Mackenna Schultz hit a hard ground ball through the left side to drive in
Ava Stahl from second.
Still down a run in the fifth, first year catcher/outfielder
Rylee Rogers took matters into her own hands. The Belmont, Wisconsin, native send a ball to the wall in center and raced around the bases for a triple. An error on the incoming throw allowed her to advance home and tie the game at 2-2.
Four singles in the top of the fourth by Waubonsee generated two runs and regained momentum for the Chiefs with a 4-2 advantage. However, the Pack answered in the bottom with a leadoff single from Redders and a run-scoring base hit by
Brooke Anderson to get within a run. Anderson was able to reach third base on the play due to an error, but the freshman was stranded their the rest of the inning. The Chiefs struck out the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to close out the win.
Redders and Coubal each went 2 for 3 to lead Madison College. Redders added a run scored. Anderson and Schultz both had a hit and a run batted in, while Rogers produced a hit and a run scored.
Wyskochil (2-1) suffered her first loss of the season after allowed four runs, three of which were earned, on eight hits and two walks. She worked 5.2 innings and struck out three. Steinhorst tossed the final inning-plus in relief and was credited with a strikeout and one hit allowed.
