Paulson guides WolfPack past Dakota County

Sophomore posts five hits, 7 RBI over pair of wins

MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College softball team finished off a weekend homestand Sunday with a pair of wins over Dakota County Technical College (MN) at Robert D. Goodman Softball. The WolfPack earned wins of 6-0 and 9-1, with the final decision coming in five innings. Sophomore Karis Paulson provided the offensive power with five hits, including a home run, and seven runs batted in as Madison extended its lead in the all-time series with the Blue Knights to 9-4 with its ninth consecutive win.

Game #1: Madison College 6, Dakota County Technical College 0

After both teams combined to strand six runners of the game's first inning-and-a-half, Madison College finally took advantage of a runner on base with a sacrifice fly from freshman Jenna Johnson to bring in Lillie Pluer from third.

The game changed with one swing of the bat in the third inning as the WolfPack had two runners one with two outs when Karis Paulson belted the first pitch of the at-bat over the left field wall for a three-run homer. The native of Monroe, Wisconsin, now boasts two home runs on the season.

The differential grew to six runs in the fifth as Paulson doubled in Brooke Anderson, and then scored via a Pluer sac fly. Dakota County appeared poised to threatened the WolfPack lead in the seventh with the bases loaded and one out, however, sophomore Hannah Aldrich finished off her complete game with a fly out and a fielder's choice to end the game.

Aldrich (4-0) remained perfect on the season with the seven-inning shutout that included four hits and three walks allowed. The Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, native, struck out two.

Paulson, meanwhile, finished 2 for 3 with four runs batted in and two runs scored. The RBI match a season best for Paulson.

Freshman Abbey Remington was tops with three hits for her fifth three-hit game of the spring. And Anderson matched Paulson with two runs scored.

Game #2: Madison College 9, Dakota County Technical College 1 (5 innings)

The WolfPack scored early and often in the day's final game en route to the run-ruled decision, and it started with a four-run first inning. Karis Paulson singled in Rylee Rogers, and Brooke Anderson followed with a run-scoring single of her own. On the game's next pitch, sophomore Madison Coubal lined a base hit to the right field corner and raced around the bases for an inside-the-park home run.

Dakota County (4-10) got a run back in the second with a solo home run; however, Madison College (21-6) responded with two more runs in the bottom half. Freshman Maya Dzick opened the inning with a single, and then scored two batters later on an error by DCTC. Paulson continued her big day with a run-scoring single to right to make it 6-1.

The home team's final three runs were tallied in the fourth, which began with Tailer Bartelt hitting a two-bagger to the wall in left. Rogers drove her in with a single, and then scored on another double from Mackenna Schultz. Paulson wrapped up the game and her day with a run-scoring triple to right.

Paulson was a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate with three runs batted in and a run scored. For the day, she amassed five hits, seven RBI, and three runs scored against the Blue Knights.

Coubal, a native of Muskego, Wisconsin, also had multiple hits going 2 for 2 with two runs driven in and one scored. Rogers was the top run scorers with three, to go along with one hit and one RBI for the former Belmont HS athlete.

Freshman Kendall Weik (8-2) picked up her team-leading eighth victory with five innings of work and nine strikeouts. She allowed one run, two hits, and a walk.
