MADISON, WISC. - A day after suffering two tough losses, the Madison College softball team rebounded in a big way with lopsided wins over the College of Lake County in a Region 4 doubleheader on Wednesday at
Robert D. Goodman Softball Field. The WolfPack used a big sixth inning to get clear of the Lancers by an 8-1 final in the opener, and then exploded for a 14-2 rout in five innings in the finale. The wins even the all-time series at 8-8 and snap a four-game losing streak against CLC.
Game #1: Madison College 8, College of Lake County 1
Madison tallied a first inning run to get the day started as
Mackenna Schultz followed an
Ava Stahl walk with a RBI-triple to kick start a highly productive day for the sophomore. The differential grew to 3-0 in the third when a walk, an error, and a single loaded the bases for Schultz, whose line drive to left plated
Rylee Rogers. A passed ball during the next at bat allowed runners to move up, setting the stage for Stahl to course in between outs recorded in a 6-3-1-5 double play.
A triple and a single to start the fourth for Lake County resulted in their first run, trimming the home team lead to two. However, the WolfPack immediately got the run back on a
Karis Paulson run-scoring double to left to push across
Brooke Anderson. The 4-1 game turned into an 8-1 game in the sixth when Madison scored four runs on five singles and a walk.
Brooke Steinhorst and Schultz each had RBI-singles, while freshman
Tailer Bartelt drove in a run with a ground out to the pitcher.
Schultz, a native of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, was 3 for 4 with three runs batted in. It's her second game with three hits this season. Anderson and Paulson both produced two hits, with Anderson scoring two runs and Paulson racking up a run scored and a run driven in. Stahl and Rogers both had a hit and two runs scored.
Sophomore
Ella Wyskochil (2-0) was dominant in the circle with a career-best seven strikeouts of seven innings, which included striking out the side in the top of the first. The former New Berlin West HS athlete held the Lancers to one run on four hits and two walks.
Game #2: Madison College 14, College of Lake County 2 (5 innings)
The game two scoring summary was very similar to game one; however, it simply featured more runs for Madison College. The Pack jumped out to a 4-0 advantage with five hits in the first seven batters.
Abbey Remington began the frame with a line drive triple to left and scored on
Ava Stahl's infield single.
Mackenna Schultz drove in Stahl with a single to right for a two-run lead, and
Karis Paulson made it 3-0 with her single up the middle that plated Schultz. The inning's final run was the result of a productive ground out to shortstop by sophomore
Hannah Aldrich that allowed
Madison Coubal to touch home.
Six hits, two walks, and an error in the bottom of the second added up to seven more runs on the scoreboard. With the bases loaded, Schultz drove in a pair of runs with another opposite field line drive, and fellow sophomore
Jenna Redders registered a run batted in with her own liner to right that scored Stahl. After a College of Lake County (14-13) error handed the home team another run to make it 8-0, the WolfPack used an Aldrich ground out to score a run.
Lillie Pluer then ripped a triple to center to score Coubal, and proceeded to score on a passed ball for an 11-0 advantage.
The Lancers tallied their first run in the third with a solo home run to left off starter
Kendall Weik. Freshman
Jenna Johnson's pop fly single to right with two outs in the bottom half got the run back as Schultz raced all the way around from first to score.
Back-to-back singles by CLC in the fourth brought the score to 12-2 before Redders completed the day's scoring with a two-run single to center in same inning.
Schultz finished her big day with two hits, three runs scored, and three batted in. For the day, the second year utility player racked up five hits, six RBI, and three runs scored.
Remington led the WolfPack's hit parade with three base knocks that resulted in three runs scored. Redders was 2 for 3 with three runs driven in and one run scored.
Weik (7-2) fanned six batters to increase her team-lead on the season with 60. The righthander from Fifield, Wisconsin, was tagged for two runs, one of which earned, on six hits and three walks in her five innings of work.
