JOLIET, ILL. - The Madison College softball team went into Joliet Junior College home field and left with a pair of lopsided wins in a Region 4 doubleheader on Friday. The WolfPack rolled to a 10-2 victory in six innings to begin the twin bill, and then closed out the finale in five innings with a 13-1 decision. The wins give the Pack a 39-16 lead in the all-time series with the Wolves.
Game #1: Madison College 10, Joliet Junior College 2 (6 innings)
Madison College set the tone for the day with a pair of runs in the first half inning of play. After back-to-back singles by
Ava Stahl and
Mackenna Schultz,
Jenna Redders lofted a pop fly to center and allowed Stahl to score from third on the sacrifice fly. The Wolves tried to cut down Schultz at third, however, an error by the third baseman allowed Schultz to score.
A two-out run-scoring single from freshman
Abbey Remington in the top of the second plated
Karis Paulson for a 3-0 lead before JJC scored third first run in the bottom of the third. A four-run top of the fourth gave the Pack some breathing room. Two errors put two runners on ahead of Remington, whose ground out to second scored Paulson. A Schultz double later in the inning brought home
Brooke Steinhorst and Stahl, and then Schultz crossed home as Redders lined a single to right.Â
The differential grew to 8-1 in the fifth when
Tailer Bartelt drove in
Madison Coubal with a ground out. In the sixth, Redders followed a walk to Schultz with a RBI-triple to right, and
Brooke Anderson went opposite field to bring in Redders for a 10-1 lead.
Schultz, a native of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, finished 2 for 2 with two walks, a team-high three runs scored, and two runs batted in. Redders racked up two hits, a team-best three RBI, and a run scored, while Paulson become the third sophomore with two hits and produced two runs scored.Â
Starter
Brooke Steinhorst (6-3) pitched the first four innings and held the Wolves to a run on six hits and four walks. She struck out two before sophomore
Ella Wyskochil took over for the final two frames, and allowed a run and a hit with three K's.
Game #2: Madison College 13, Joliet Junior College 1 (5 innings)
Madison College put the finale out of reach real fast with three or more runs in each of the first three innings.
Brooke Anderson had a run batted in and
Karis Paulson registered two RBI with the only two hits in a first inning that saw four free passes and an error en route to a 4-0 lead. The differential moved to 7-0 in the second inning, which opened with an
Ava Stahl base hit. She then scored when
Mackenna Schultz hit a line drive to center. Anderson recorded another run driven in with a grounder through the left side to plate Schultz, and
Madison Coubal's sacrifice fly to right made it a three-run inning.
Three more walks loaded the bases in the top of the third, and
Jenna Redders took advantage with a two-run double.
Lillie Pluer's single made it 10-0 before freshman
Emily Nichols grounded out to bring in Redders for an 11-run lead.
Joliet Junior College (5-14) got on the board in the third with two hits and a fielder's choice. The scoring closed in the fourth as Schultz drove a fly ball to center for a two-bagger that allowed Remington and Stahl to touch home.
The WolfPack registered 11 hits, led by two each from Schultz and Anderson. Schultz had a team-leading three runs batted in and two runs score to finish the day with four hits, five runs scored, and five RBI. Anderson had a pair of runs scored and two runs driven in, as did Redders off her hit and a walk. Remington paced the Pack with three runs scored on a hit and two walks.
In the circle, sophomore
Hannah Aldrich worked all five innings and kept JJC to a single run on four hits and a walk. She also had one strikeout.
