ELGIN, ILL. - A massive comeback to erase a seven-run deficit gave the Madison College baseball team a 13-10 Region 4 win over Elgin Community College in yet another impromptu game to take advantage of good weather. The WolfPack, who dropped to #18 in the latest
NJCAA Division II Poll following their 3-5 trip to Arizona, trailed 10-3 after four innings, but scored ten unanswered run, including seven in the seventh inning. The win is the ninth straight for the Pack against the Spartans, and improves the all-time series lead to 36-21.
After Madison College stranded a pair of runners in the top of the first, the home team got right to work with a four-run bottom half against freshman starter
Adison Tevz. A walk, a single, and a sacrifice bunt put runners in scoring position, and a single to center drove them in for a quick 2-0 lead. A run-scoring double two batters later, followed by a productive ground out made it 4-0.
The WolfPack got on the scoreboard in the top of the second with the first of three solo home runs on the day. First year infielder
Charlie Schau drove a 3-1 offering over the center field fence to make it a three-run game. The Spartans, however, got it back with a run-producing single that was aided by a dropped third strike. Madison College made it a 5-3 game in the third with a pair of solo bombs.
Charlie Marion led off the frame with a smash to center and
Payton Frehner followed two batters later with a drive to right field. Marion, a sophomore from Franklin, Wisconsin, leads the team with three home runs, while Frehner's first career home run makes the second year infielder from Waukesha, Wisconsin, the fifth WolfPack player to go yard this season.
The Spartans answered back with another four-run inning, using four free passes and two hits to extend their lead to 9-3, while also driving Tevz from the game. A leadoff solo homer to start the bottom of the fourth off righthander
Eamonn Mulhern made it a seven-run game.
The rally started slowly in the top of the fifth when two walks and a passed ball allowed Marion to score his second run of the day. The momentum completely switched dugouts in the seventh as the WolfPack loaded the bases with no outs on a walk and consecutive singles from Marion and
Will Johannes. Frehner's double to right drove in
Chris Calico and Marion, and a single off the bat of freshman
James Duncan allowed Johannes to score to make it 10-7. Still with no outs and the bases loaded again after a hit by pitch of
Grant Ross, Schau was struck by a pitch to force in a run and an error by the shortstop plated another to get the visitors within a run. Freshman
Jalen Gellings then hit into a double play that was good enough to bring Duncan home and even the score at 10-10. Back-to-back walks put runners on each base, and a balk called against the ECC pitcher brought in the go-ahead run.
Madison College added a little breathing room in the eighth with Frehner racing in to score on a wild pitch and Duncan touching home on a Ross RBI-single through the left side. Sophomore
Michael Carpenter, who entered the game with one out in the bottom of the seventh, struck out all eight batters he faced to close out the win and earn his first career save.
Freshman
Noah Musolf (1-0) picked up the win for his 1.1 innings on the hill. The righty from Franklin, Wisconsin, struck out two and allowed one base runner before handing the game over to Carpenter, who matched a season-high with eight K's. Tevz tossed 2.2 innings and was tagged for nine runs, eight of which were earned, on four hits and five walks. He did fan three before Mulhern took over for 2.1 innings of one-run ball, allowing seven hits and striking out two batters.
Four of the WolfPack's nine hits went for extra bases, and they took full advantage of ten walks and three hit batters. Frehner went 2 for 2 with two extra base hits and three walks, and set season-high marks with three runs scored and three runs batted in. Marion also had two hits and two walks, which added up to a RBI and a season-high three runs scored.
Duncan, a transfer from Illinois State University, had a hit, a walk, a run batted in, and two runs scored. And Schau drove in a pair of runs and scored another with his lone hit.
