SCHAUMBURG, ILL. - First year arms
Gradin Taschner and
Camden Broske limited the Oakton College bats to just seven hits in a combined 11-0 shutout win in seven innings on Thursday at Wintrust Field. Madison College, ranked #18 in the latest
NJCAA Division II Poll, picked up their second straight win overall and their third win this season over a Region 4 opponent. The victory gives the WolfPack an 18-13 lead in the all-time series, as well as three consecutive wins over the Owls.
Madison College jumped on the scoreboard early with back-to-back singles from
Chris Calico and Charlier Marion to start the game. Calico, a native of West Salem, Wisconsin, had stolen second base before racing in on Marion's ground ball to right field. Two more singles sandwiched around a sacrifice bunt put runners at the corners in the second inning, and allowed Calico to drive in a run with a sac bunt of his own down the first base line that brought in
Kobe Vosberg for a 2-0 lead.
The top of the third saw freshman transfer
James Duncan drive a double to right to plate
Payton Frehner, and then second year infielder
Jake Petasek dropped in a bloop single with the bases loaded that scored Duncan and put the Pack up by four.
Madison College broke the game open in the fourth with six runs on five hits and three free passes. A walk, a double, and a hit batter loaded the bases to start the inning, and Frehner took advantage with a run-scoring single to right. After Duncan got plunked to force in a run,
Charlie Schau and Vosberg each registered two-run singles to advance the differential to ten runs.
The game's final run was produced in the fifth when Frehner touched home on a Duncan ground out to second base. Oakton College (7-4) had an opportunity to avoid the run-rule in the seventh after loading the bases with nobody out, however, Broske used a fielder's choice play at the plate and back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.
Taschner, a Neenah, Wisconsin, native and transfer from Illinois State University, struck out three batters and allowed seven base runners on four hits and three walks over five scoreless innings as he improved to 2-0 on the season. Broske worked the final two frames of scoreless baseball, giving up three hits and a walk. The former West Bend West HS athlete struck out four of the ten batters he faced.
Vosberg, a first year infielder from Cuba City, Wisconsin, enjoyed a career-day with four hits, two runs batted in, and a run scored. He was followed in the lineup by Petasek, who was 3 for 3 with a run driven in. Marion was the only other player with multiple hits, going 2 for 4 with a RBI and a run scored.
Duncan led the Pack with a career-best three runs batted in and also scored two runs as he went 1 for 3. Schau was right behind with two RBI, a run scored, and one hit.
Frehner paced Madison College in the runs scored department with three touches of home plate, to go along with a run driven in. And Calico went 1 for 3 with two runs scored and a RBI.
