Artichokes grab early lead, take decisive win over #8 WolfPack

Madison College closes AZ trip this afternoon at Paradise Valley

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. - The Madison College baseball team suffered its fourth loss in the last three day on Thursday, will all four setbacks coming with the WolfPack scoring two or fewer runs. Scottsdale Community College used a pair of high-scoring innings early to hand the Pack a 12-2 run-ruled loss in eight innings. The Fighting Artichokes own a 13-4 lead in the all-time series with Madison College.

Scottsdale Community College (14-14) owned a 1-0 lead after two batters in the bottom of the first inning, using a walk, a steal, and a double off starter Liam Stumpf. Two walks later and the bases were loaded with two outs when an error by third baseman Kobe Vosberg allowed the Artichokes to clear the bases and take a four-run lead.

Madison College answered with two runs in the top of the season, taking advantage of three walks and two hits. Charlie Marion opened with a double, and scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Charlie Schau. Three batters later with the bases loaded, Jake Petasek lined a base hit to left to drive in Payton Frehner. Unfortunately, the WolfPack would leave the base paths filled with a strikeout and a ground out.

In the home half of the third, SCC tacked on three more runs for a 7-2 lead off two hits, a walk, and an error. The differential grew to 9-2 in the third. Madison College again left the bases loaded in the top of the fourth as Will Johannes flew out to center field, and then one last time in the top of the seventh as Schau struck out and Marcelino Alonso grounded into an inning-ending fielder's choice.

Scottsdale Community College reached a 10-2 lead in the seventh with a sac fly, and then closed out a walk-off, run-ruled victory in the eighth with a two-run, two-out double.

Stumpf (1-2) was tagged for nine runs, three of which were earned, on five hits and four walks, as well as three wild pitches. The righthander struck out one in his 2.2 innings of work before handing the reigns over to freshman Gradin Taschner for 5.0 innings on the hill. The transfer from Illinois State University fanned six batters while also giving up three runs, with only one earned, on three hits and a walk.

At the plate, Madison College generated five hits from five different players. Schau and Petasek each had a hit and a run batted in, while Marion and Frehner both produced a hit and a run scored.
