GLENDALE, ARIZ. - The Gauchos continue to have the WolfPack's number. Madison College dropped both ends of a closely-played baseball doubleheader Tuesday at Glendale Community College, falling 5-0 in the opener and 2-1 in the finale. The two wins extend the Gauchos win streak over the Pack to seven straight and 13 of the last 14, including an elimination game at last year's NJCAA Division II World Series. The all-time series stands at 13-3.
Game #1: Glendale Community College 5, #8 Madison College 0
The Gauchos, who are receiving votes in the latest
NJCAA Division II Poll, got things going early with the bats. A lead off triple in the bottom of the first against starter
Grant Ross was followed by a single to make it 1-0. A two-out double four batters later drove in two more runs for an early 3-0 edge.
After the Madison College stranded two runners in the second, GCC made it 4-0 when a lead off walk, a sacrifice bunt, and a error by first baseman
Payton Frehner added up to another run. The game's final run came in the bottom of the third after a pair of walks put a runner in scoring position ahead of another Gauchos single.Â
The WolfPack seemed prime to get on the scoreboard in the fourth inning after
James Duncan doubled to center and Frehner singled to put runners at the corners, however, freshman
Jalen Gellings hit into a double play to end the threat. In the top of the sixth Madison College had runners on after back-to-back base hits from
Charlie Marion and
Will Johannes, but neither were able to score after a ground out and an offensive interference call ended the inning. And a ground out and strikeout with two runners on in the top of the seventh closed out the game.
Frehner, a native of Waukesha, Wisconsin, and
Evan Iwinski, a Franklin, Wisconsin, product, each generated two hits to account for half of the WolfPack's total.
Ross (0-1) took the loss in his first pitching appearance of the season. He was tagged for five runs, four of which were earned, on nine hits and four walks. The righthander from Pewaukee, Wisconsin, struck out two batters over four innings before freshman
Sam Steuber took over for the final two frames. Steuber walked one and struck out one.
Game #2: Glendale Community College 2, #8 Madison College 1
Game two saw very little offense, with the two teams combining for three runs and six hits. Glendale Community College (24-7) got their first run on a lead off double and three consecutive walks, the last of which by starter
Carson Klaus forced in the run. A ground out to second baseman
Chris Calico by the subsequent hitter pushed another run across for a 2-0 advantage.
Madison College cut the deficit in half in the fifth inning. Freshman
Marcelino Alonso reached on an error by the third baseman to open the inning, and fellow first year
Jalen Gellings provided a single to left to put runners at the corners. Freshman infielder
Kobe Vosberg then dropped down a perfect sacrifice bunt along the first base side to allow Alonso to score. Unfortunately, the WolfPack would leave two runners stranded in the fifth, as well as in the seventh despite a GCC error putting the game-tying run 90-feet from home with two outs. Calico grounded into a fielder's choice out at second base to end the game.
Gellings, a native of Eden, Wisconsin, registered his first career two-hit game, with the team's only other hit coming from sophomore
Will Johannes.Â
Klaus (0-1) went just two innings, giving up two earned runs on two hits and four walks. The Adams, Wisconsin, native, struck out three before former Madison East HS athlete Eamonn worked the final four innings without allowing a hit or a run. He did walk two and fan three.
