Big inning propels #8 WolfPack past Western Nebraska

Freshman Tevz fans nine in first career start

MESA, ARIZ. - Aside from one inning Sunday, the offenses for both Madison College and Western Nebraska Community College remained quiet in what ended as a 4-1 win for the WolfPack at Mesa Community College. Freshman pitcher Adison Tevz recorded nine strikeouts in five shutout innings before the Pack plated all four of their runs in the sixth inning. The gives Madison College a 3-0 lead in the all-time series, with all three games being played in Arizona over the past three seasons.

Very few batters were able to successfully reach base during the scoreless first five innings. Both teams stranded a pair of runners in the third inning, but it was the WolfPack to finally put a run on the board in the sixth inning. Sophomore Nick Nowak opened with a single to center, and fellow second year Will Johannes drove him in with a double to make it 1-0. Then with two outs on the board, Madison College received run-scoring singles from Payton Frehner, Kobe Vosberg, and Dayton Rozinski-Hicks to push the advantage to 4-0. Nowak returned to the plate with the bases loaded, however, he went down looking to end the half inning.

A walk, a single, and an error filled the bases for WNCC in the bottom half, and a two-out single to left field off reliever Camden Broske gave the Cougars their only run. Broske got out of the inning with a pop out to Frehner at second base.

Madison College left two runners on base twice over the final three innings, while Western Nebraska (8-11) sent the minimum to the plate during that same time span.

Tevz (1-0), who pitched one inning during the WolfPack's season-opener at College of Lake County, limited the Cougars to just two hits and two walks as the New Berlin, Wisconsin, native, earned his first collegiate victory. Broske, a righty from West Bend, Wisconsin, gave up one unearned run on two hits and two walks, while striking out one, in his three innings. Andres Kleinsek, a second year arm from Fitchburg, Wisconsin, secured his first career save with a 1-2-3 effort in the ninth that included a strikeout.

Johannes and Nowak each finished with a pair of hits to lead Madison College. Johannes had a run scored and a run batted in, while Nowak scored a run. Frehner, a native of Waukesha, Wisconsin, was 1 for 3 with a RBI and a run scored.
