Loss to rival Stormers in home finale puts WolfPack in wait-and-see

Madison College's postseason fate rests in hands of other Region 4 teams

MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College men's basketball team wrapped up the 2023-24 regular season schedule on Tuesday night with a 111-72 to defending national champion and #10-ranked Milwaukee Area Technical College inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. The WolfPack went 9-17 overall and 6-13 against Region 4 opponents, a mark that currently has them on the bubble for the upcoming Region 4 Tournament. Madison College still leads the all-time series by 64-58 margin dating back to 1970-71, however, the Stormers' sweep of the regular season series gives them a ten consecutive victories in head-to-head matchups.

Milwaukee Area Technical College (23-5) raced out to an 8-0 lead before freshman Tyler Mitchell put the WolfPack on the board three minutes into the game. A Stormers dunk two minutes later gave the visitors their first double-digit advantage of the night, however, a quick five-point run by Madison College narrowed the gap to 17-9 with 13:15 to play. Three consecutive three-pointers made it 26-9 before the WolfPack again answered with an 8-0 surge.

Still trailing by 13 with 5:30 to play in the half, second year wing Peter Gustafson finished a contested layup to trigger six straight points and suddenly the Pack with within 37-30. MATC-Milwaukee finished the half with a 12-1 push that made it an 18-point differential at the break.



The Stormers seized control of the game with a 12-0 surge early in the second half, and then slowly pulled away throughout the remainder of the game.

Deante Luster, a sophomore wing, registered 28 points, eight rebounds, three assists, three steals, and one block before fouling out of the game. He was 11 for 28 overall with a pair of three-pointers and made 4 of 5 free throws to push his career scoring total to 941 points with a career average of 19.6. Luster's 23.9 points per game average this season is ninth in NJCAA Division II and second in all of Region 4.

Mitchell racked up 15 points on 7 of 12 shooting with a free throw, and also had five rebounds. The Dallas, Texas, native scored in double-figures in all but five games played this season.

Fellow freshman Armon Freeman came off the bench to score ten points, making one of his four shots from long range. It marks his third double-digit scoring game of the season.

Madison College (9-17) entered the week as the final team in the upcoming 16-team Region 4 Division II Tournament, which is based on a tiered point system of games played within the region. The WolfPack sat narrowly ahead of the College of Lake County (9-18). The Lancers also last on Tuesday, however, they have one game remaining Thursday against Elgin Community College. In all, there will be ten games Thursday and six games Saturday that can all impact where teams finish and how many points a region win is worth. The postseason assignments will be released Monday, February 26, with quarterfinal play to begin on Thursday, February 29 at the sites of the higher seeds.
