DES PLAINES, ILL. - In their first contest of the season against a ranked opponent, the Madison College women's basketball team dropped an 81-60 Region 4 game against undefeated and #22-ranked Oakton College on Saturday. Four freshmen scored in double-figures for the WolfPack, who trailed by ten heading into the fourth quarter. The setback evens the all-time series at 3-3.
The visiting WolfPack led for most of the opening five minutes until Oakton College (15-0) usad a layup to go ahead 8-7 with 5:04 to play in the quarter. The Owls outscored Madison College 8-2 over the final four minutes of the first quarter.
The teams went back-and-forth throughout the second quarter before the home team took the first double-digit lead of the game with an inside bucket to go ahead 28-17. Following another home team score, the WolfPack engineered an 8-0 run that included back-to-back three-pointers from
Aubrey Maass and
Jaia Carson as the pulled back within two possessions at 30-25. Unfortunately, the Owls answered with a 10-1 surge to close the half up 40-26.
Madison College continued to challenge the Owls, winning the third quarter by a 21-17 margin.
Hannah Solie's three-pointer with 7:15 to play made it a ten-point differential, as did a pair of free throws by Maass to end the quarter at 57-47.
The Owls flexed some muscle to open the fourth quarter, scoring six straight points. Another Maass triple with four minutes remaining kept the WolfPack in reach at 72-58; however, Oakton College ended the game with a 9-2 surge to hold off the Pack.
Forward
Dani Latz continued her double-double streak with 13 points and 13 rebounds for her eighth straight. She was 5 for 9 from the field and made 3 of 4 free throw attempts. The Bloomer, Wisconsin, native, also led the team with three steals.Â
Maass and fellow first year guard
Keelyn Zwirschitz each scored 12 points. Maass, a former Pardeeville HS athlete, made two of her three baskets from beyond the arc and was 4 for 6 at the free throw line, to go along with four boards, two assists, and two steals before fouling out. Zwirschitz converted 5 of 11 shot attempts and made both her free throws. The native of Antigo, Wisconsin, reeled in six rebounds.
Jaida Gaskins, a 5'8" guard from Coon Rapids, Minnesota, rounded out the double-digit scoring with ten points as she made 4 of 12 field goal tries with one 3-pointer and a free throw.
The WolfPack finished shooting 40% (22-55) overall, 41% (5-12) from long range, and 58% (11-19) at the charity stripe.
