SUGAR GROVE, ILL. - An 18-2 run midway through the fourth quarter provided enough separation Thursday night for the Madison College women's basketball team to defeat Waubonsee Community College by a 73-68 margin for the first win of the 2024-25 season. The decision gave head coach
Angel Whetstone her first career win against a Region 4 opponent, and snapped a 21-game losing streak dating back to last season. Four players scored in double-figures as the WolfPack improve to 11-6 all-time against the Chiefs, who had won the last four meetings.
Neither team lead by more than two points throughout the game's entire first quarter, which ended with the WolfPack leading 11-9. Following a layup by freshman
Aubrey Maass, second year guard
Camilla Hauser, who missed all of her true freshman season due to injury, registered her first career field goal with a three-pointer. Maass followed with a triple of her own as a quick 8-0 run to open the second quarter put Madison College ahead 19-9. Waubonsee Community College (0-0) closed to within two points; however, the visitors added five points before settling for a 29-26 halftime lead.
Madison College maintained their advantage throughout much of the third quarter until the Chiefs turned a seven-point deficit into a 48-47 lead going into the final ten minutes thanks to a 9-1 surge. The scoring run reached 14-1 and a 53-47 differential when Maass connected on another long-range basket to ignite a stretch that saw the WolfPack score 18 of the next 20 points for a 65-55 lead with four minutes to play. The game, however, was still in doubt in the final minute as the Chiefs closed to within one possession with a layup with 33 seconds remaining. Maass sealed the win with three free throws to give Madison College their first win in Region 4 play since a 15-point victory over Harper College on February 7, 2023.
Maass, a former Pardeeville HS athlete, matched her season-high with 19 points for the second consecutive game as she made four 3-pointers as part of a 6 for 11 effort overall, while also going 3 for 4 at the free throw line. The 5'7" guard added four rebounds, three assists, and a steal.
Dani Latz, a freshman forward from Bloomer, Wisconsin, was 6 of 9 from the field and 4 for 5 at the stripe for a career-high 16 points. She also reeled in six rebounds, picked up three steals, and blocked two shots to set season-high's in each category.
Hauser came off the bench to tally a career-best 12 points, with most of the damage coming from a 7 for 8 performance at the line. The native of Beloit, Wisconsin, led the team with seven rebounds in her collegiate debut. And
Keelyn Zwirschitz, a first year guard from Antigo, Wisconsin, notched her second consecutive game with double-digit points, contributing 11 points, four boards, two assists, and two blocks.
Madison College shot 28% (22-58) from the floor, 40% (8-20) beyond the arc, and 78% (21-27) from the charity stripe. Waubonsee Community College finished at 33% overall, 22% from distance, and 73% at the free throw line.
