Undefeated Lake County takes down Madison College

WolfPack unable to overcome tough shooting night, slow start

MADISON, WISC. - Sometimes the ball just doesn't go in the basket. That story line played out Wednesday night inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium as undefeated College of Lake County got out of town with a 70-50 victory over Madison College in Region 4 action. The WolfPack attempted 27 more shots and committed eight fewer turnovers; however, the home team could not make up for a 2 for 19 start to the game. The Lancers closed the all-time series game to within a game at 7-6 in favor of the Pack.

Freshman Dani Latz canned a turnaround jumper in the lane ten seconds into the game to give Madison College a quick 2-0 lead. The WolfPack did not score again until another Latz bucket with just under two minutes remaining in the first quarter, snapping a near eight minute scoring drought that featured 14 missed shots and two missed free throws.

The College of Lake County (5-0) lead 21-4 to start the second quarter as the team's began to play more even basketball. Latz scored again with 6:32 remaining in the half to trim the differential to 25-12. The Lancers closed the half with a 7-0 burst to go ahead 41-18 at the break.

During the second half, Madison College generated an 8-0 surge from the third to the fourth quarter to trim the gap down to 19 when Latz opened the final ten minutes with another inside basket. Freshman Camilla Hauser drained a three-pointer a couple minutes later to make it 58-39. The WolfPack would only get as close as 18 in the final minutes after a three-pointer from Hannah Solie and a layup by Nariah Wilson.

Latz, a native of Bloomer, Wisconsin, posted her first career double-double with 15 points and a season-best 11 rebounds. She finished 7 for 15 from the field and 1 of 5 at the free throw line.

Wilson, a former Brown Deer HS athlete, scored eight of her career-high 11 points in the fourth quarter and was 4 for 6 overall. Solie, a first year guard, led the team with four assists and four steals, to go along with three points.

After the being outscored by 17 in the first quarter, Madison College only trailed CLC by three over the rest of the three quarters. The WolfPack finished 22 for 84 (26%) overall, 4 for 24 (16%) from long range, and 2 for 9 (22%) at the free throw line. Lake County was 42% (24-57) from the floor, 26% (7-27) outside the arc, and 75% (15-20) at the line. Despite a 22-14 differential in turnovers that favored the Pack, the Lancers owned a 20-12 lead in points off turnovers. Madison College did finish with an 18- edge in fast break points.
