WolfPack advance to Region 4 semifinals with win over Waubonsee

Ladwig nets only goal in first half, Welch posts clean sheet

MADISON, WISC. - The #3-seeded Madison College women's soccer team opened postseason play with a 1-0 win over #6-seeded Waubonsee Community College in Saturday's Region 4 Division II Tournament quarterfinal at Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East. Sophomore Jerzey Ladwig netted the match's lone goal, while freshman goalkeeper Kaelyn Welch earned her fifth full time shutout of the season in propelling the WolfPack to a season-best fifth consecutive win. The Pack is now 3-0 all-time against the Chiefs, including a 4-0 road win back on September 14.

Madison College was the aggressor early as they posted four shots, including two on goal in the opening 18 minutes of the match. Not long after, Ladwig came through with her fourth scoring strike of the season. As the match moved into its 24', sophomore forward Atziry Ocampo demonstrated some superb ball skills along the right sideline before sending a pass into the penalty box. The ball was controlled by Liz Pierson, playing in just her third game since joining the team late in the season. The Janesville, Wisconsin, native dumped the ball back to the penalty arc, where Ladwig took one swing with her left leg and accurately lobbed a shot over the goalkeeper and just under the crossbar. The native of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, and transfer from UW-Parkside has scored in each of the last two outings for the WolfPack.

The action evened out after Madison College took a one-goal lead as the half finished with just one more shot on goal for the home two, while Waubonsee Community College (10-7) were denied on two shots in the final five minutes against Welch. The Monroe, Wisconsin, native, came through with four more saves in the second half, and received a little help from the crossbar on a free kick during the final minute. Welch boasts a 0.53 goals against average this season, and the WolfPack have outscored the opposition by a 45-10 margin.

The match finished with both teams producing seven total shots and the Chiefs owning a narrow 6-5 lead in shots on goal. Madison College held a slim 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Freshman Ava Schmidt led the team with two shots on goal.
