MADISON, WISC. - Tuesday's 68-57 pre-Thanksgiving break win over NJCAA Division I Highland Community pushed the Madison College women's basketball team to their first three-game win streak and better than .500 record since early in the 2022-23 season. The WolfPack were led by a pair of double-doubles from first year players
Dani Latz and
Nariah Wilson. The win inside
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium evens the all-time series with the Cougars at 17-17.
A quick 7-0 run capped by a three-pointer from freshman
Keelyn Zwirschitz gave Madison College a 13-8 lead late in the first quarter; however, Highland Community College (2-4) ended the opening ten minutes with five straight points to pull even at 13-13.
The WolfPack seemed to be continuing their recent trend of strong second quarter play with another 7-0 burst to take a 22-14. Unfortunately, the offense stalled without a basket over the next five minutes as the Cougars rallied to take a 25-22 advantage.
Still a three-point margin starting the second half, the tide turned in the third quarter when first year guards
Aubrey Maass and
Jaida Gaskins canned back-to-back three-pointers to start a 13-0 surge. A tip in a few minutes later by Wilson gave the Pack its first double-digit lead at 43-32 with 3:39 remaining in quarter
Madison College maintained that double-figure lead for most of the fourth quarter en route to their third win against a Region 4 opponent.
Latz, a native of Bloomer, Wisconsin, recorded a career-high 20 points, to go along with 14 rebounds for her fifth straight double-double. The 5'10" forward was 9 of 17 from the field and 2 for 2 at the free throw line. She added three assists, three steals, and a block.
Wilson established new career-bests with 15 points and ten rebounds for her first career double-double. The Milwaukee, Wisconsin, native made 4 of 10 on the night and converted 7 of 10 free throws.
All ten WolfPack players scored in the game, including Zwirschitz and
Jaia Carson, who both had missed the previous two games. The home bench outscored the Cougars by a 35-11 margin. Madison College owned a 53-41 lead in total rebounds, and turned 22 offensive boards into a 15-7 edge in second chance scoring.
Madison College finished the game shooting 34% (23-68) overall, 4 for 20 (20%) from distance, and 18 of 27 (67%) at the stripe. The held Highland to a similar overall percentage of 34% (21-61) and without a three-pointer on an 0 for 9 effort. The visitors were 15 of 22 (68%) at the free throw line. The teams combined for 53 turnovers.
