MADISON, WISC. - Freshman
Jaida Gaskins ignited the Madison College women's basketball team with a remarkable performance off the bench in Saturday's 81-44 win over Kishwaukee College in a Region 4 showdown inside
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. Gaskins poured in 27 points and helped the WolfPack to a second straight win, both of which featured big second quarters by the home team. The victory gives the Pack a 17-11 lead in the all-time series with the Kougars.
Both teams struggled to get their offenses going as the game was even at 4-4 after five minutes of basketball. Still even at 8-8 a couple minutes later, the WolfPack closed the first quarter with a 9-2 run with Gaskins scoring five points in that stretch.
Kishwaukee College (0-7) stayed within striking distance for the first few minutes of the second quarter until back-to-back three-pointers from freshman
Aubrey Maass pushed the differential to a dozen and ignited a 17-1 surge that included five made three-pointers.
A 28-13 advantage in the second quarter gave Madison College a 22-point halftime lead, and while the Kougars moved their deficit down to 18 a couple of times, the WolfPack strung together nine consecutive points and led by a 60-34 score heading into the fourth quarter.
Consecutive three-pointers by Gaskins and Maass midway through the fourth quarter gave the Pack a 71-39 lead and started a 12-0 surge before claiming the 37-point victory.
Gaskins, a 5'8" guard from Coon Rapids, Minnesota, scored 16 of her career-high 27 points in the second half as she posted her second straight double-digit scoring game. She finished 9 for 16 overall and 3 for 6 from distance after going 1 for 14 beyond the arc in the first four games of the season. Gaskins also converted 6 of 10 free throws, set career-highs with seven rebounds and three steals, and dished out three assists.
First year forward
Dani Latz recorded her fourth consecutive double-double, finishing with 16 points and 11 rebounds, to go along with three assists, four steals, and two blocks. She was 7 of 16 from the field and made both of her free throws.
Maass rounded out the double-figure scorers with 12 points, all of which came from outside the arc with her second game with four made triples.
A'nise Keys, a forward from Kenosha, Wisconsin, matched Latz with a career-best 11 rebounds for her second straight game with ten or more boards. She also added three points, two steals, and an assist.
Madison College racked up a 63-53 lead in total rebounds and a 13-7 edge in second chance points. The WolfPack forced 31 turnovers by the Kougars, which resulted in a 26-19 differential in points off turnovers. The home team was also plus-eight in points in the paint.
For the game, Madison College shot 32 for 88 (36%), 8 for 22 (36%) from long range, and 9 of 18 (50%) at the free throw line. Kishwaukee posted shooting percentages of 25% (19-74), 8% (2-23), and 33% (4-12).
