MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College men's basketball team's win streak was in jeopardy Saturday inside
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium; however, a resilient come-from-behind effort resulted in a 70-64 defeat of Region 4 foe Kishwaukee College. The WolfPack, who were receiving votes in last week's
NJCAA Division II Poll, rallied from down 14 to claim their fifth consecutive victory and improve to 5-0 in region games. Despite the result, the Kougars still hold a 17-10 lead in the all-time series.
Kishwaukee College (4-3) owned a double-digit lead at 15-5 thanks to a three-pointer as the clocked moved past five minutes of play in the first half. Another long range hit with 10:20 to play extended the differential to a game-high 24-10. Madison College did not panic, and answered with an 8-0 run powered by four points from freshman
George Whaley IV. The WolfPack kept pushing, and after
Ceegan Rauls drained a three-pointer inside of 30-seconds remaining in the half, fellow freshman
Ryen Jones hammered home a momentum changing dunk off an outlet pass from
Carson McCormick to pull Madison College within 34-29.
The Kougars clung to a small lead throughout the first ten minutes of the second half. A three-point play on a
Cullen Rauls layup gave Madison College its first lead of the day at 49-48. Kishwaukee answered and again maintained a narrow advantage over the next few minutes until four consecutive made free throws by Cu. Rauls and
JP Pleasant put the home team out in front for good. The Pack converted 11 of 12 free throws over the final six-plus minutes to help keep Kishwaukee down by two or three possessions.
Cullen Rauls finished with a team-high 17 points as he made four field goals, including one 3-pointer, and sank 8 of 9 free throws. The sophomore from Fall River, Wisconsin, also had seven rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and a steal. The transfer has scored in double-figures in six of the team's seven games.
Freshman
George Whaley IV scored 16 points, with three rebounds, an assist, and two steals. The native of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, was 7 for 17 overall and 2 for 5 at the stripe. Whaley now boasts five games in double-digits, including each of the past three.
Jones posted 12 points and a career-high eight rebounds. He had dunks on two of his four baskets and also made four free throws.
Madison College finished the day 22 for 52 (42%), but struggled to a 3 for 13 (23%) effort at the three-point line. The WolfPack was 23 for 31 (74%) at the stripe. Comparatively, the Kougars were 40% (24-59) overall, 30% (8-26) from distance, and 8 for 15 (53%) at the line. The home team owned a 15-6 lead in points off turnovers, and were plus-six in points in th paint.
