MADISON, WISC. - A late goal in each of the first and second halves on Saturday resulted in a 2-0 victory for Madison College over the College of Lake County in a key Region 4 women's soccer battle at
Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East. Freshmen
Suzy Hinds Cruz and
Ava Schmidt netted the goals, while
Kaelyn Welch earned the clean sheet as the WolfPack extended their win streak to four matches and their non-losing streak to eight. The victory also gives the Pack a 3-0-1 lead in the all-time series with the Lancers.
The College of Lake County (6-4-1) controlled the ball for most of the first half, racking up five total shots with Welch denying four of them in the first 42 minutes of the match. The first Madison College shot came in the 43' and Hinds Cruz made it count. A misplayed ball by the Lancers was controlled by first year midfielder
Grace Brown, who was able to locate Hinds Cruz inside the penalty box arc. The midfielder from Madison, Wisconsin, gathered, spun around to her left, and curled a shot around two defenders and inside the left post to beat the goalkeeper. She now owns 13 goals and is tied for 17th in the nation. The assist was the third this fall for Brown.
Still a 1-0 match in the final ten minutes, first year forward
Ava Schmidt provided a little insurance for the home team in the 83'. The Lake Mills, Wisconsin, native, launched a high-arcing free kick on the right side of the from about 45 yards out and it flew perfectly over the goalkeepers hands in the upper right corner for second scoring strike of the season.
Welch, a native of Monroe, Wisconsin, registered seven saves as part of her third full time shutout of the season. She accomplished the same feat against the College of DuPage and Waubonsee Community College. As a team, the WolfPack have blanked five opponents out of nine played in 2024.
The College of Lake County finished with a 7-2 lead in shots on goal as part of an 11-4 edge in total shots. The Lancers also were unable to take advantage of a 5-0 differential in corner kicks.
