Madison College's win streak halted by #19 South Suburban

WolfPack held scoreless for first time since season-opener

SOUTH HOLLAND, ILL. - The Madison College women's soccer team entered Wednesday's Region 4 match at South Suburban College riding a four-match win streak and non-losing streak of eight straight. That all came to a halt as the Bulldogs, ranked 19th in the latest NJCAA Division II Poll, held the WolfPack without a goal for the first time since the team's season opener on August 31 en route to a 2-0 victory. The win for SSC keeps them undefeated in Region 4 play, and also gives them a 2-1-1 lead in the all-time series with the Pack.

South Suburban College (11-1-2) took a 1-0 lead in the 12' of the match when the Bulldogs were able to sneak a pass through the heart of the WolfPack defense, leaving goalkeeper Kaelyn Welch in a one-on-one situation. Forward Charlene Mendoza made a move to get past Welch and took advantage of a wide-open net.

The one-goal differential remained into the second half until the Bulldogs added some insurance with a 54' goal. Madison College played a goal kick to the right side of the field; however, SSC continued to apply pressure and eventually forced a turnover deep in the WolfPack zone. It led to a successful scoring strike by midfielder Ruby Robles to the upper right corner for a 2-0 lead.

Held without a shot on goal to that point, Madison College was only able to generate two shots on goal, only to have both denied by the SSC goalkeeper. South Suburban College owned a 12-3 edge in total shots and a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal, as well as a 5-1 lead in corner kicks.

Freshman Ava Schmidt was credited with both shots on goal, while fellow first year Suzy Hinds Cruz added the third shot overall.

Welch came up with five saves and allowed two goals, ending a streak of 226 scoreless minutes for the team and 230 scoreless minutes for the Monroe, Wisconsin, native.
