JOLIET, ILL. - It had been more than a month between losses for the Madison College women's soccer team, and just like the game after their first setback, the WolfPack got back to winning immediately with a 2-1 road win Saturday against Joliet Junior College. Freshman
Grace Brown broke a 1-1 tie with a goal early in the second half. The Region 4 victory gives the Pack a 13-4-2 all-time lead against the Wolves.
Goal-scoring started quickly for both teams, as the score was 1-1 within the first ten minutes of the match. With Madison College on the attack in the 3', the Wolves attempted to clear the ball; however, sophomore
Yessenia Angeles moved up to intercept a pass and terminated a shot from 25 yards out that deflected off the goalkeepers outstretched hands and into the top right corner. The goal is the second this fall for the midfielder from Middleton HS.Â
The lead didn't last long as Joliet Junior College (6-8-1) got behind the WolfPack defense in the 10' to set up a one-on-one situation for Jalyssa Villafuerte against Madison College goalkeeper
Kaelyn Welch. Villafuerte put a hard shot past a charging Welch to even the score.
Still tied 1-1 going into the second half, Madison College was quickly able to generate some offensive pressure. Sophomore
Camille Gilbertson worked hard to keep the ball on the JJC side of the pitch and eventually pushed a pass through the back line of Wolves defenders to find Brown racing towards the net. Brown had only the goalkeeper to beat, which she did with a spinning kick that curved towards the left post and in. The game-winning goal in the 49' is the seventh this season for the Janesville, Wisconsin, native.Â
The WolfPack defense did its part from then on, holding the Wolves to two shots the rest of the match. Welch, the former Monroe HS athlete, turned one away while the other sailed high. She finished the match with one save and one goal allowed.Â
Madison College created a 7-4 advantage in total shots with a 6-2 lead in shots on goal, while both teams earned four corner kicks.
Brown and
Jerzey Ladwig led the Pack with two shots on goal each. The assist by Gilbertson gives her three on the season, tying her with Brown for second on the team.
