MADISON, WISC. - A goal scored late in the first half proved to be the game-winner for Madison College in a 1-0 victory over Region 4 and in-state rival Milwaukee Area Technical College on Saturday at
Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East. Freshman
Grace Brown tallied the only goal of the match, while fellow first year
Kaelyn Welch registered her fourth full-time clean sheet of the season. The win gives the WolfPack ten wins on the season, marking the team's first double-digit win season since 2019 and their fourth overall. Prior to kickoff, Madison College Athletics celebrated the Sophomore Class of 2024, which includes
Annaleise Romeis,
Mirella Zielke,
Jerzey Ladwig,
Shayla Mendonca,
Jeanelle Alonso,
Atziry Ocampo,
Camille Gilbertson,
Emma McGlynn, and
Yessenia Angeles.
Both teams came out very aggressive offensively, combining for five shots and putting two on goal in the game's first ten minutes. After
Ava Schmidt was denied in that early sequence,
Jerzey Ladwig also saw a shot stopped in the 24'.
As the close of the first half neared, Madison College (10-2-1) found a way to make one count. Off a throw in from the left sideline, freshman
Liz Pierson, who was added to the roster just days before, found Brown racing towards the penalty arc. Brown won a footrace with two Milwaukee Area Technical College (5-4-2) defenders and was able to stop the ball while they zipped past. The Janesville, Wisconsin, native, then booted a left footed shot over the outstretched arms of the goalkeeper and just under the crossbar. The goal is her 11th of the season and fifth in the last three games. The assist by Pierson marks her first collegiate points.
The intense play continued throughout the second half, with neither team giving an inch. The Stormers managed to produced five shots and put four on goal, while the WolfPack were only able to generate two shots during the first 15 minutes of the half. Welch was up to the challenge, making seven saves over the 90 minutes to deliver the second straight shutout win and seventh of the season for Madison College. The Monroe, Wisconsin, native even got a little help from the crossbar when MATC-Milwaukee took a long punt from their goalkeeper and sprinted down the pitch for a shot from the left side of the goalie box. Welch deflected the ball just enough that it hit the crossbar and ricocheted back into the field of play during the 85'.
The match finished with Stormers owning a 10-6 advantage in total shots, a 7-3 lead in shots on goal, and a 4-3 differential in corner kicks.
The WolfPack are 7-0 all-time against the Stormers.
